The first unit’s discussion was regarding scientific thinking and the steps of the research method. Defining questions, conducting research, and pre-reading to insure that the same question is not asked over and over and over again. Conducting the study exactly as was done before is not necessary, so conducting background reading to insure that the research you are planning to do is individual. According to the seminar, research has come a long way. The external validation was not accurate due to the origins of the people researched and studied. It will be reliable if there is validation externally and internally when the research is repeated.
The APA, American Psychological Association has published guidelines when writing professional and research papers in the field of psychology. APA formatting has been adopted as a standard formatting for psychologists and researchers studying psychology. It is required of papers that are submitted for peer review to be in this format. I, for one, have a very hard time remembering all of the rules in APA formatting. I have to continuously look back into the writing center for guidelines as I work on referencing cited work.

If a person does not follow ethical standards there is potential of harm to participants particularly when the participants are unaware. It is a general rule of APA standards, beneficence – to do no harm to participants. Fidelity and responsibility is another General Principle of APA, psychologists must carry themselves with the utmost professionalism, cause no exploitation, and behaving in the most trustworthy manner. Integrity is also listed as a general principle. Psychologists should be honest and truthful and should not engage in activities or practices that are fraudulent. Under the General Principle of Justice, all persons should have access to the research attached to a study and all participants should be treated fairly. There should be no tricking participants or engaging them in a practice that could potentially cause a long-term effect. I like the reference to “Little Albert”.
