For instance, there are many servant leadership qualities that can allow you to better handle diversity and the prejudices one may experience throughout life. Listening is a huge characteristic that many people struggle to learn. Being an active listener may be very difficult, it is consciously making the effort to hear not only the words that another person is saying, but also trying to understand the complete message being sent to you from that person (Active Listening). Active listening can help throughout life in many ways, especially when it comes to understanding diversity and prejudices a person may obtain. By fulling listening to what someone has to say, and trying to understand the whole message, it can tell you so much about a person. Knowing more about people then introduces the listeners to things such as prejudices they may contain. Another servant leadership quality that is important while trying to understand someone’s story is obtaining empathy. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the same feelings of another (“Empathy.” Dictionary.com). Not just knowing how you feel after something happens to someone else, but about understanding the situation from their perspective, to feel what they are feeling (“Empathy.” Psychology Today). Feminist by definition refers to an advocate for social, political, legal and economic rights for women’s, and for those rights to be equal to those of a man (“Feminist.” Dictonary.com). Throughout the years, many people have taken the term “feminist” and turned it into a very negative connotation. When some people think of the word feminist they immediately jump to crazy conclusions such as: lesbian, advocacy, crazy, rude or even unshaven (Messina). With this negative connotation, feminists today are much less respected and often made fun of through the use of social media. It was important to learn more about feminism through Gina Messina, a speaker that came and spoke at Viterbo University, and through various movies watched, and plays read.
I think that it was very important that this class was focused through the perspective of theatre because it allowed me to see a completely different side of the world. It is a completely different world especially if you focus on way women are treated at their place of work. Before this course, I never realized some of the everyday struggles that women have to face especially in the world of theatre and entertainment. It allowed me to open my eyes to struggles women face because I have not experienced many of these
