Jack wore his mourning clothes and was about to set his plan in motion when he saw Algernon pretending to be Earnest. After falling deeply in love with Cecily, Algernon decudes to propose and was extremely happy when he found out that Cecily exchanges his affection. However, his happiness was lessened when he found out that Cecily agreed to this marriage mainly because of his name Earnest. Therefore, he decided to visit Dr. Chausable to change his name to Earnest. Meanwhile, Gwendolen arrives at Jack'scountry house to surprie him. There she meets Cecily; at first neither of them knew the other. However, when they both said that they were engaged to Earnest, the place turned into a war field. Both Jack and Algernon arrived at the climax of the confrontation and confessed that neither of them is called Earnest. Upon hearing their confessions, Gwendolen and Cecily left the room angrily. Jack convinced Gwendolen that he lied about his identity so he can spend more time with her in the city and that he was going to change his name to Earnest anyhow. Similarly, Algernon told Cecily that he lied because he wanted to meet her and that he will also change his name to Earnest. Nevertheless, as soon as she knew that Cecily was rich and about to inherit a great amount of money, Lady Bracknell agreed to cecily and Algernon's marriage. Jack informs Lady Bracknell that, as Cecily’s legal guardian, he refuses to give his consent to her union with Algernon an offered her a deal: as soon as she consents to his marriage to Gwendolen, Cecily can have his consent to marry Algernon. However, Lady Bracknell refutes the deal. As they were about to leave, Dr. Chasuble entered the room and mentioned Miss Prism, Lady Bracknell's former servant, in the middle of the conversation. As soon as Lady Bracknell heard that name, she told Dr. Chasuble to bring Miss Prism. When she came in, Lady Bracknell accuses her of having left her sister’s house twenty-eight years before with a baby and never returned and demands an explanation. Miss Prism explains that she was taking the baby on a stroll and was holding a manuscript in her hand. Distracted, she put the baby instead of the manuscript in a suitcase and left it in a metro station. As soon as Jack heard these ords he ran into his room and brought the suitcase he was left in when he was a baby. Miss Prism immediately recognized that suitcase and told him that it is the one she left the baby inside.
