Asthma symptoms after occupational exposure in workers of the refinery were found to be 31.3% in a previous study, and in the general population of Sudanese in Khartoum state to be 10% in adults and 12% in children. This study aimed at finding the prevalence of asthma symptoms by using the modified (ISAAC) questionnaire and assessing the lung functions of the residents around Khartoum oil refinery Methods In this study all subjects aged 13years or more from ALDoum village were invited to participate, 80 participants (45 males, 35 females) agreed to contribute to the study. A modified (ISAAC) questionnaire was distributed to all subjects which covered the needed information for inclusion in the study: age, tribe, socioeconomic status, past medical history, symptoms of asthma in the past 12 months (wheeze, SOB, cough, allergy and allergic rhinitis) Pulmonary function test parameters (FEV1, FVC and PEFR) and the reversibility test were performed in all individuals with wheeze using a portable spirometer and a peak expiratory flow meter. Results Asthma symptom prevalence based on wheeze during the past 12 months was found to be 47.5%, and a 55.2% of them were males and 44.7% were females. Allergic rhinitis and skin allergy symptoms prevalence was found to be 63.8% and 20% respectively. Reversibility test was positive in 51.5% of the asthma symptoms positive patients in comparison to that of the refinery workers which was 25%. Reversibility test positive patients had all the cardinal symptoms of asthma. Conclusion The prevalence of asthma symptoms in Al-Doum village near the refinery was more than the general populations in Khartoum state Introduction Environmental exposure to petroleum refinery products poses a great threat to human health and the long-term effects of ambient air pollution on lung function have been investigated in many cross-sectional and some cohort studies. It is a small village with a total population of 650.
All residents aged 13-70 years of both sexes on whom the inclusion criteria applied, were included with a total of 80. (Table 3)

Subjects aged (13-70), living in the study area for more than five years and gave their consent to participate, Exclusion criteria if the Subjects were unable to perform lung function tests or was suffering from other respiratory diseases like Known cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, malignancy and drug addicts or those who are working at the refinery.
Sampling procedure: Residents who met the inclusion criteria were totally covered by house visits
Data collection and data collection tools: A modified (ISAAC) questionnaire was filled by household visits. The questionnaire covered personal data, asthma symptoms, allergies symptoms any treatment, and for some of them ISAAC video was shown to explain the meaning of wheeze. Individuals who answered yes to asthma symptom wheeze were issued a second questionnaire specially designed for asthma patients’ and then their symptoms were further validated by lung function tests.
