I am not only of East Asian descent, but also female. In this society, I am considered an ethnic minority but I will not let this hinder nor undermine my abilities or potential. Cultural appropriation has arisen and brought into society spreading further awareness in the sense of deep appreciation and acknowledgement of other cultures while honoring and respecting them. Picking and choosing elements of a culture to be used and flaunted as an aesthetic without crediting or accepting it as a whole is unacceptable. It is in the same way as allowing someone to take pieces of you as they do not allow you the same, it is not a mutual understanding and neither an exchange. The lack of knowledge and exposure is at fault for unnecessary hate speech and discriminating attitudes. The first amendment allows freedom of speech but I believe that those who wrote it meant for the best of intentions. There should be no excuse upon verbal and physical actions that degrade and belittle other human beings. Everyone is allowed the freedom of segregation in their own way, whether it be in public or alone, they are not met the standards that suffice them along society 's perceptions. The role that race plays in our daily life is not minor, it is 2015. We are always surrounded by people of various ethnicity and races. In social identity, biases are ignored even when they are obvious and protected by the Civil Rights Act of 1964. As a whole, humans should focus on eliminating oppression and not perpetuating it especially to avoid repeating the past. Remove the prejudice and the abstract borders, promote unity and representation in order to cultivate and be mindful of our
