The Manifest Destiny was the name given to the Anglo-American (white) expansion into the west. The Manifest Destiny believed that white Americans were superior people who believed in God. Americans were to populate North America “sea to shining sea” and spread the religion of Christianity. Manifest destiny highlighted American’s confidences, they moved west for more land, it uplifted the American’s freedom and democracy. The United States uses the Manifest Destiny to start war with Mexico from1846 to 1848. Manifest Destiny communicated American claims to western lands, at once highlighting nation superiority and offering a solution to national anxieties. Kansas and Nebraska lay within the Louisiana Purchase. This Act divided the Whig party into Norther and Southern wings. The Kansas- Nebraska Act banned the word slavery from the Constitution, the word slavery was treated as a cancer on the public. The Kansas- Nebraska Act the Missouri Compromise prohibited slavery from the latitude 36 degrees 30’ N. Any state above this line was a free state, any state below this line was a state for slavery. In the North Congress made laws against slavery. In the South Congress made laws for slavery. Northern’s must return escaped slaves to owners. The Kansas- Nebraska Act was a compromise to reduce tensions and give a solution to slavery and expansion of railroads. The compromise bought time, but it didn’t resolve territorial issues. The first shots of the Civil War were on 12 April, 1861 at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. America is at war from 1861 to 1862. The Civil War started because the North and South were fighting over slavery, it was the bloodiest war in the United States history. Republicans wanted to abolish slavery, Southerners wanted to keep slavery. Southerners also thought the “shrinking south” if slavery does not expand, the south will die. Northers were fighting to preserve the Union. The Civil War ended by the Emancipation Proclamation, on 1 January 1863, being all slaves were free in the Confederate territories and exempt border slave states that remained in the Union.
