This essay aims to investigate how and why the Romanesque Architecture came about and its transformation in style during the medieval period. By using examples such as the Durham cathedral in Britain, and the The Cathedral of Saint-Lazare in France, I aim to exemplify the development of the Romanesque architecture through focusing on architectural vaults, arches and decorations, to support my essay further.
Romanesque architecture was an amalgamation of Roman, Carolingian, Ottonian, Byzantine and local Germanic traditions, and a product of the increase in religious ardor from the 10th to 11th century. An architecture development during the period was dominated by the Christian Church, the edict of Milan forms a logical starting point, the moment when the emperor Constantine gave Christianity an official status within the Roman Empire.
