She Creates collage photos to spread messages about feminism, power, sexuality, identity etc. The use of a black and white photo behind a shocking message makes the viewers turn their head towards it and think deeply about the meaning and a reflection on themselves.
‘Your body is a battleground’ (1989).
This print was made for the 1989 reproductive rights protest, the march for women’s lives, in Washington D.C. (). The piece is a woman’s face staring straight ahead and split down the middle showing both a positive and negative filter. This symbolizes the good vs. evil of the woman and her inner struggles. The fact the woman stares straight ahead shows that Kruger is addressing the viewer themselves. The message “Your body is a battleground” is support for the feminist struggle, showing the female viewers how strong a female can be and not succumb to idealized weak women.
