ALS Ice Bucket Challenge (IBC): Focus Group Analysis

The Ice Bucket Challenge (IBC) is an activity involving the dumping of a bucket of ice and water over a person's head, either by another person or self-administered, to promote awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and encourage donations to research that went viral on social media during July–August 2014 (van der Linden, 2017). As communication scholar, I think the IBC is a successful social mobilization campaign because its twin objectives of promoting awareness of ALS and encouraging donations to research had been achieved in terms of output if not outcomes. For instance, IBC was a social media craze that took over social media in the summer of 2014 and was vastly successful movement by any standards, raising over $100 million for ALS organizations …show more content…
