The House on Mango Street and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian were amazing novels. The House on Mango Street was a novel I could a way relate to. As a Latina, racism is often seen as a black and white issue which excludes the other ethnicities which also struggle. Reading the novel enriched my understanding of what it could mean to be Latina but it also made me reflect on how racism has affected my life and my personally. It was something I had not realized. Although I was proud of my heritage at the beginning of class reading the novel and the readings leading up to it made me appreciate the struggle of my ethnicity. Before either Honors 101 or Race in the US, I was not aware of the extent of the issues Native Americans face. Reading the True Diary but the issues into a comical interpretation. I was able to understand how so many years of neglection and unnecessary intervention can decimate a population. I did not that same indigenous reservation had casinos which made me think that these individuals were doing fine however through the book I understood this is not always the case. Although the book is fiction it allowed me to understand the outcomes of living in a reservation and wanting to escape for a better live but not wanting to betray your family. The article which created a dichotomy between situations white individuals created and what if African Americans did them. It just showed the infinity insane ways which white privilege is still around. The article my Angela Davis just was a different perspective on the prison system because it was something she was at one point part of and due to that gave the female perceptive of it. It also created my awareness for the horrendous conditions which women face within prisons. The New Jim Crow excerpt also helped me understand some of the history for the criminal justice system. Every reading was essential for the course because it gave different expert options but also but it into a person perspective instead of just a
