The hot weather of the day continues into the night. The sun has set and the stage is cloaked in darkness with the exception of a single burning candle and faint moonlight. Manus has just exited the dance and stands solemnly outside. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a watch. He lets out a faint sigh and, in search of Maire, he glances longingly across the field in front of him. Suddenly, he spots Maire and Yolland together in a loving embrace. He is noticeably upset and begins speaking in a fast and aggravated manner.
Manus How could she? Destroying our relationship for him? Participating in such actions with a foreigner? (He contorts his face in disgust.) More than a foreigner, an imperial servant! He 's …show more content…
She makes nondescript gestures with her hands and tries to explain the phrases that Manus spoke. Her miming is of no use. Yolland’s frustration is only exonerated by her futile attempt at translation.
You’re lucky - lucky - I don’t smash - smash - you in right here!
Manus advances toward Yolland in a threatening manner. He smirks at Yolland’s shaking body and terrified expression.

Yolland What-what is happening? Maire, what is he going to do? What is going on? (realizing the severity of the situation) Manus… please, consider what you are doing before you make a fatal mistake.
Manus (To Yolland in English) Believe me, it’s not a mistake.
Manus, his eyes glowing with rage, takes two steps toward Yolland and begins to swing. Using the rock as his main method of attack, he battles Yolland to the ground while the two exchange a series of forceful grunts. Yolland is noticeably bleeding from his hairline as he braces himself for Manus’ blows. Then:
Yolland Please sir, I’m begging you, let me go. I promise I’ll leave Maire, I’ll leave town, I’ll leave
