Here is a quote spoken by Wole Soyinka. He says that the greatest threat to freedom is the absence of criticism. But I am against this statement. Meaningful criticism may be better then saying nothing, but that does not guarantee the freedom of every person. The people who are for this statement are the people who cannot think about all kinds of people around the world. I will explain by giving a few examples about those people.
First, the issue of gender has been a big problem in Japan. Women have been having huge disadvantages in society. Having lower salaries, being underestimated, not being allowed to do things men do. As long as there is discrimination, there will be criticism and there will be a threat to freedom. Discrimination is getting better nowadays, but it still exists all over the world. Being black, being Asian, being different and being the minority causes the discrimination. The people in the majority feel they get freedom by excluding the minority.
The greatest threat to freedom is not the absence of criticism but criticism itself. Criticism hurt people. And take their freedom away. Criticism will last in this world forever. And as long as it does, then there will always be a threat to freedom. If there is someone who believes that the absence of criticism is the greatest threat to freedom, then that person should know better of the various types of people around the world.
