The Great Falls Autobiography

Improved Essays
Being born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey, I have been afforded the privilege of witnessing the Great Falls of Paterson my whole life. I have visited the Great Falls many times throughout my life. When I was young with my parents, whether it was for a day in the sun or for a festival. I grew up appreciating this magnificent work of nature, I also took a part in cleaning up the falls, both as a volunteer and as a member of the Paterson Youth Council and Urban Youth Corps. I have brought my family to the falls to help with the clean ups, from my sisters, to my cousins, to my youngest nephews, and those memories stick to me to this day. There has always been some sort of restoration happening at the falls and I have not been on the bridge

Have you ever been to Great Wolf Lodge? For my 10th birthday, I went to Great Wolf Lodge with my four best friends and my sister. The first thing we did after we got there was quickly changed into our bathing suits. But my little sister forgot her bathing suit so we had to go to the gift shop to get her one. After we were all ready we ran into the water park and it was blistering hot…

On Saturday, April 21, I participated in the Earth day event at the Superfund site on the Duwamish River. I had an opportunity to speak with James Rasmussen of the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition/Technical Advisory Group (DRCC/TAG) about some of the challenges of working with such a diverse group of stakeholders and coming up with common goals for the restoration. James explained that one of the preliminary goals of the project was to include the people living in communities that are impacted by the condition of the river, and ensure their voices are heard. He spoke about BJ Cummings, who founded the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition in 2001 to represent and empower the Duwamish Valley's diverse resident, immigrant, fishing, recreational, environmental,…

The nineteenth amendment of 1920 granted women the right to vote in American elections. Though it was a huge milestone in the quest for women’s suffrage, it omits a complex discussion of its true origins in the mid to late 1800s. Many associate the movement with names like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Additionally, places like Seneca Falls, New York are tagged as the birthplace of the Women’s Rights Movement in America. In The Myth of Seneca Falls: Memory and the Women’s Suffrage Movement, 1848-1898, Lisa Tetrault aims to uncover the mythological narrative constructed around the Seneca Falls Convention, as well as disclosing the factual complexities of the suffrage movement.…

The New York Islanders returned home early Friday morning from a physical - and some would say lucky - 4-3 overtime win in Winnipeg just hours earlier. They had just finished a brutal road trip through three time zones across Canada and despite a 5-1 record to that point on the trip, had clearly not played their best. Not to mention, Nick Leddy, Matt Martin and, as we would learn Saturday, Calvin de Haan, would all be banged up to varying degrees. Martin and Leddy would be well enough to return to practice on Saturday in preparation for a huge ‘four-point swing’ game against the rival New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden, an arena that, unbelievably, the Islanders had yet to visit this season but don’t mind at all. “It’s one of those games, almost like a home game when you come back.…

Growing up in Mendocino; a village nestled between the colossal California redwoods and the frigid Pacific, a strong sense of community was instilled in my values from a young age. With the paucity of industrial goods and services, I was taught to share and contribute to our hometown. As much as the rustic natural terrain made an impact on me, It was the people of Mendocino who truly shaped who I am today. Warmth, belongingness, and compassion were emitted from every townsman. My favorite example of our resiliency is how we supported one of our fallen residents.…

A mixture of mud, blood, and dust coated our bodies; to my left and right, cannonballs flew at us. Though we knew not how or when we were going to succeed, we just knew that we had to succeed. Every hardship I had gone through had led to this moment, every hardship I went through had made me become this person. I am Lafayette, and if socialising, sailing the terrifying sea, and living in Valley Forge couldn't shake me, then no British army would.…

In a hike on Whiteface Mountain, the fifth-highest peak in the nearby Adirondack Mountains, there are several – both young and old – who took time to enjoy the outdoors. Mark Rhode said he has been coming to the Adirondacks every year since he was eight years old; however, his wife, Linda, to whom he had been married the day before the interview, is a “downstater,” he says, and had never traveled to the Adirondacks before. “This is our place of refuge,” he says. “Recharge the battery, when life gets too hectic, come up here and reset the clock.” Mr. Rhode said he knows that not a lot of people take advantage of the natural wonders that await them.…

I have had a lifelong passion for environmental issues that arose from a childhood spent amongst mountains, canyons, islands, and rivers. The Anacostia River near my home is dubbed “The Forgotten River,” for it has been transformed by neglect. It was integral to my childhood—my family canoed on the river, my crew team practiced on it, and my Eagle Scout project involved rehabilitating one of its wetlands. The river showed me that environmental issues are complex, involving science, social justice, politics, economics, and history. From a young age, I was stunned by my city’s apathy and saw a change that needed to occur.…

I consider my hometown to be Grand Forks, North Dakota. I was born at the former United Hospital in Grand Forks in 1994, and have lived here for my entire life—with the exception of about a year spent in Walhalla, North Dakota, due to the flood of 1997. The schools that I attended while growing up are all within fifteen minutes of driving from my current house. My parents live just 6.2 miles away from me. Although Grand Forks is my city of birth, it wasn’t until I started college that I really considered it my hometown.…

I knew this was a bad idea from the start. My dad was envious of finding a newer trail to the source of the falls, Domkey Lake. the real trail to the lake was about 2 miles further up Lake Chelan at an old mining village named Lucerne, but oh no, we have to "take the shortcut" we followed a game trail for about 50 yards then it just kind of stopped. We pushed on though, the kids like my friend Garrett and I thought that this was not going to end well, but we bush wacked for about a mile and came upon the ridge of a hill where a previous fire had roared through and torched almost all of the trees.…
