The Global Animal Rights Movement Against Sea World

Great Essays
Animal rights have become a common idea over the last several years, and activists in pursuit of these ideas have increased. Animal rights activists rally over the abuse and mistreatment of animals domestically but more often they rally over the abuse and mistreatment of animals in business and medical fields. The solution activists normally suggest is to release captive animals and to use safer methods in research. These ideals are morally correct, however activists fail to see that a complete release of captive animals and a halt to our current methods can be damaging to humans and animals. Animals serve as not only entertainment for people but are part of human diet and educational resource. In exchange humans serve as rehabilitation centers …show more content…
Cowperthwaite and the rest of her crew that produced the documentary “Blackfish” are either documenters or cinematographers; however none of them have expertise in the field of marine life ("Blackfish Official Film Site"). There are facts to be told about Sea World that are conveniently left out of the documentary. Sea World has a strong history is American with its roots tracing back to Florida in 1959, with the opening of Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida. Since then, Sea World has expanded its gates around the United States with 11 different parks. Traditional Sea World theme parks are located in San Diego, California, Orlando, Florida and San Antonio, Texas ("Sea World History" para 1- 4 ). All of these amusement parks are economic gain for Sea World Entertainment but what is often forgotten is the role this big business has to …show more content…
“Blackfish” told the story of Sea World’s most aggressive and sad orca, Tilikum. Before moving to Sea World, he shared a very small tank with two other large orcas, that’s was incredibly too small for them, at a public aquarium called Sea Land that opened in 1969. Tilikum has been involved in three murders since he was captured as an infant and he has grown to be one of the largest male orcas in captivity ("Blackfish Official Film Site”). “Blackfish” claims he is used to scare other orcas into behaving, and is also one of the top orca’s used in Sea World’s breeding program (Welsh para 3). But “Blackfish” isn’t blaming Tilikum for the murders; they imply the fault of Sea World’s mistreatment of

This is where pathos comes in as Blackfish’s main rhetorical component. When interviewing John Crowe, a man who formerly caught orcas for SeaWorld, he addresses the brutalizing accounts of stealing baby orcas from their families in the wild. Crowe describes that the parents of the baby orcas still stayed and kept calling out to their children. He states that, “It’s like kidnapping a kid away from its mother.” Not only in the wild did SeaWorld separate mother and calf, but also in captivity.…

At the end of the article "Truth About Blackfish" it is clear that they failed to change anyone 's mind about "Blackfish". Their strategy to lie and manipulate the truth to their readers did not work. As a result Sea World has damaged its own credibility and image to their readers. It is possible that "Blackfish" is manipulative with the footage sequences. However in the argument of whether or not Killer Whales are hurt by being in captivity "Blackfish" still makes the better…

One of the most noteworthy incidents at SeaWorld involving their animals was in 2010, when an orca whale named Tilikum killed his trainer, Dawn, after a show. Tilikum was captured in the waters off of Iceland in 1983. He was separated from his family and the rest of his pod, (pathos) and he was sold to a marine park called Sea Land. During his time at Sea Land he was starved as a training technique, and he was repeatedly attacked by the two other orcas in his pen (pathos). Tilikum was forced to perform for long hours, and he developed stomach ulcers from stress and exhaustion.…

Many American families believe that SeaWorld is the best family vacation spot with its many parks all over the country. A typical visit to SeaWorld includes petting dolphins, visiting the aquarium, and being splashed by a majestic Orca. While SeaWorld may seem family-friendly, it definitely is not animal friendly. The tourist attraction, also known as SeaWorld, tortures its animals by ripping them from their homes and families, placing them in pools that might as well be bathtubs. Although families enjoy taking a trip to SeaWorld, they would feel a lot differently if they knew about the constant pain and torture inflicted on SeaWorld’s animals.…

Nothing could be further from the truth.” (cite) Not long after the film became popular, SeaWorld released a “fact sheet” that follows along with the movie and points out the errors or exaggerations made. Leaving no stone unturned, the park thoroughly went through the documentary with a fine-toothed comb in order to try and ease some of the tension created by the film. According to SeaWorld, Blackfish employs false and emotionally manipulative sequences concerning the collection and separation of killer whales. “Through stock footage and videos mismatched to the narratives, the film implies that SeaWorld collects killer whales from the wild and separates mothers and calves.”…

‘Blackfish’, a film on the orcas held captive at SeaWorld, exposes the many horrors that go on behind the scenes at these ‘abusement’ parks. The shocking documentary, directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, was released in 2013. They gathered the following former SeaWorld orca trainers to voice their opinions on captivity and state facts about the incidents and sangers of working at the park: John Hargrove, Samantha Berg, Mark Simmons, Carol Ray, Dean Gomersall, John Jett, Jeffery Vente. Working and ‘swimming with orcas is inherently dangerous’ and the performers were consistently at risk of the killer whales having an episode of aggression. In contrast, the orcas are a danger to themselves and the surrounding whales, and are tortured.…

SeaWorld is fighting back because they must, or else they would look like they do not care about either their orcas or the death of one of their employees. Unfortunately, Tilikum’s death is only encouraging more unfair ammo against SeaWorld, even though there is no evidence that Tilikum’s death was…

With the documentary there also came lots of questions as to if everything seems to be correct and every fact can be backed up with specific evidence to prove that SeaWorld is in fact engaging with their whales the way that Blackfish states. One of the top questions that has remained unanswered is if SeaWorld says that things in Blackfish documentary were false and they used fallacies then why did SeaWorld not offer to give an interview and declined them when they offered? This is something that remains unanswered and so does every other statement stated by these top trainers that used to work at SeaWorld. Another thing that is not clear to the audience of Blackfish is why are there no recent SeaWorld trainers that are currently working with these orcas’ that were interviewed? Even though everyone that was interviewed in Blakfish were ex- orca trainers they still had more than just the facts, they gave specific evidence to back up any claims towards…
