“Do you think you could maybe stop drinking?” (Walls 116). Jeannette Walls dad’s, addiction to alcohol was the main reason for the struggles of his family. On Jeannette’s tenth birthday, she only had one wish: it was for her father to stop drinking. If her father could stop drinking, then maybe just maybe some of their struggles could be gone. In The Glass Castle, by Jeannette Walls, Rex’s addiction to alcohol forces his family to go through severe conditions and he creates severe struggles.

Due to alcoholism, Rex makes his family struggle for money because somehow it runs out really quick. He drinks so much that his family has to suffer because they run out of money quickly as a result of Rex’s drinking problems. In the text it states, “I’ve got a houseful of kids and a husband who soaks up booze like a sponge” (Walls 197). Like they don't have enough money, Jeannette and her siblings have to suffer a cold. Like they don't have enough money for food; they have to eat from the trash, but when Rosemary starts working, they have just enough money for food, but it is still tight, they have to manage the money the correct way. The author lets us know that, ”When dad asked me for another five bucks a few days later, I gave it to him. It made me feel sick thinking I was now ten dollars off my budget. In a few more days, he asked for twenty” (Walls 210). Now that Jeannette and her siblings have just enough money for food, dad comes and asks for money. The money that he asks for is not intended to be used in a reasonable way. He wants that money to buy liquor. Instead of seeing his kids eat, he decides to go out and spend the little money that Jeannette has to spend on his addiction. He decides to provide for his drinking problem instead of providing his kids with food. He decides to manipulate Jeannette to give him money because he knows Jeannette loves him and she can't say
