The Giver Rhetorical Analysis Essay

The process of creating my missing chapter from ‘The Giver’, a chapter titled ‘Truth’. My intention was to provide a clear picture of Jonas's experience as he receives a fresh memory from the Giver by extracting inspiration from Lois Lowry’s dynamic novel, The Giver. A novel that explores the community's lack of freedom to create the ideal society. I employed various language techniques in my writing, such as use of metaphor, simile, personification and onomatopoeia, to arouse a tangible sense of amazement and leave the audience questioning why we are not talking about the beauty of the world. "Truth" was written with the intention of drawing the reader into the magical world of Jonas's recently discovered memory, while also exploring themes of freedom and choice. The intention was to bring the reader along with Jonas on his quest to uncover the …show more content…
Exploring the theme of truth, freedom and beauty, I used a range of techniques to display Jonas’s interaction with his dream. My focus on the second paragraph shifts to the exploration of Jonas’s curiosity about his memory. In the onomatopoeia “he began to feel as if he was shrinking as small as a mouse” conveys the realisation of the tension he felt and how intense Jonas felt when the notes were beginning to enlarge. The purpose of this was to convey the reader's attention, allowing them to see the theme of freedom, perhaps freedom of getting out of this memory. Additionally, the onomatopoeia “Pam” implies what the melody notes can do and the message they wanted to send to Jonas, though he was frightened. Furthermore, the notes could also shape reality, that not everything is seen as it is seen, and that is why the notes were first presented as a calm beautiful memory till which it began a total nightmare, enlarging itself, creating loud noises to reveal the truth to Jonas about life and the mysterious

As Jonas received the memories The Giver gave him, he learned how to feel, and to understand pain. For example, "He had walked through woods, and sat at night beside a campfire. Although he had through the memories learned about the pain of loss and loneliness, now he gained, too, an understanding of solitude and its joy." (Lowry 122) Also, "I felt sad today, he had heard his mother say, and they had comforted her.…

Jonas’ sacrifice of his own well being communicates his values freedom and of true knowledge for the community. Jonas suffers hunger, pain, and loneliness. Most people have enough to eat, but those of us who don’t have enough can relate to Jonas when it says “At night, while gabriel slept beside him, Jonas lay awake, tortured by hunger” (173). This quotation utilizes the literary device of rhetorical question. The rhetorical question in this quote is “have you ever wondered what a human life is worth?” This question is posed to the reader, who obviously can’t actually respond to Lina. Instead of being answerable, the question serves to get the reader to consider how much value is actually placed on the lives of the Lithuanian deportees in the novel. The blunt statement of Jonas’s worth being equal to that of a pocket watch sets the standard for the treatment the characters will receive as they embark on their journey.…
