“ They made conveyance of goods unwieldy. Trucks; buses. Slowed them down. So- He waved his hand, as if a gesture had caused hills to disappear. ‘Sameness,’ he concluded” (84.) Sameness was best for the community because the hills made it inconvenient for vehicles. When the community was created the Elders made everyone and everything the same. The Elders believed that if they do this then it will keep the community safe. One way they made it safe for the community is that they make the choices for the people in the community. “We don’t dare to let people make choices of their own. ‘Not safe?’ The Giver suggested. ‘Definitely not safe,’ Jonas said with certainty” (98.) It would be unsafe for people to make their own choices because they could make the wrong choice. The Elders keep the community safe by not giving them choices. The Elders make sure when they make a choice for a person it is 100% the right choice. The community does not experience colors, memories, or feelings because without that the Elders believe that it is the safest way to live. The memories hold the feelings and The Giver gives Jonas these memories.. “Jonas opened his eyes and lay contentedly on the bed, still luxuriating in the warm and comforting memory. It had been there, all the things he had learned to treasure” (123.) Jonas feels joy and love when experiencing the memory and he enjoys it. The community needs feelings like love and happiness to truly enjoy life. The Elders have taken away the feeling to make everyone in the community the same. The Elders think that the community shouldn’t have the memories because it is unsafe and will destroy the utopia. “The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It’s the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared” (154.) Jonas and the Giver agree that it would be best if the community had the memories. The people in the community are kept ignorant, they do not know what death is or true happiness is. The Elders have kept them ignorant because they feel that this way everything is perfect and the people do not have to worry about anything.
