Before Jonas starts his training he is negative towards differences, and his general behavior is similar to the other citizens of the community. After he receives memories his character matures, and he realizes that methods such as the assignment of family units takes away the personal choice of citizens, and Sameness takes away the freedom to be an individual;society’s negative reaction to differences is being used by the government to control the urge to be different. As Jonas begins to realize these things, he begins to rebel. Freedom may seem like something to take for granted, but the Giver shows what the repercussions would be if freedom is taken
