The Giver By Lois Lowry: Character Analysis

The Giver follows the story of a young boy living in a seemingly perfect utopian society, that is divided into communities. This rigid society does not value differences, and is void of freedom. When Jonas turns twelve he is assigned to a special role as the Receiver of Memory in the community, which fundamentally changes his character. Jonas gains the ability to See Beyond, and receive memories, which gives him insight into the freedom intolerant ways of the community. The Giver portrays vibrant, lifelike characters such as the main protagonist Jonas, his instructor The Giver, a child that is brought into contact with Jonas, Gabriel.The novel is meaningful, and poignant,containing many valuable life lessons. Before Jonas starts his training he is negative towards differences, and his general behavior is similar to the other citizens of the community. After he receives memories his character matures, and he realizes that methods such as the assignment of family units takes away the personal choice of citizens, and Sameness takes away the freedom to be an individual;society’s negative reaction to differences is being used by the government to control the urge to be different. As Jonas begins to realize these things, he begins to rebel. Freedom may seem like something to take for granted, but the Giver shows what the repercussions would be if freedom is taken
