“The gaming industry is subject to the same pressures as any other entertainment business does from rapidly changing technology, a fickle audience and production companies that want maximum profits from minimal investment” (Herr, J. 2015). With this idea in mind, as a lobbyist for Electronic Arts (EA) Corporation, I would advocate for tougher laws to be implemented in order to effectively combat software piracy. “Software piracy involves the violation of license agreements and occurs when you download, copy, file-share, install, or distribute digitized material in the form of computer software programs and entertainment media without authorization from the owner/creator” (osu.edu. n.d.). Software piracy is an illegal act that is detrimental to the gaming industry. As a result, jobs are lost and billion of dollars in revenue from game sales progressively commence to decrease, if these acts continue to occur within the gaming industry. Being that the case, “in fiscal year 2015, EA posted GAAP net revenue of $4.5 billion” (investor.ea.com. 2015) from the sales of blockbuster video games such as: Madden NFL and The Sims. Also, consider that over 8,000 employees are currently employed at EA (ea.com. n.d.). Thus, proposing for stricter piracy laws on behalf of the Electronic Arts Corporation would be critical, in order to sustain its economic growth and jobs for thousands of people under such conditions. “In any event, it seems that the legislative program adopted by a country will most likely only ever be part of the solution to the problem of content piracy. The relationship with consumers and potential consumers is key. For example, when games publishers have aggressively pursued alleged pirates within the UK, such actions were derided as witch hunts and resulted in negative publicity for all concerned” (Groves, P., & Lister, M. 2012). Ergo, as a lobbyist for EA, I would diligently collaborate with lawmakers and regulators in pursuing tougher pirating laws, in a well-calculated manner. Hence, any type of public relations (PR) nightmare may be prevented, thus, avoiding the PR fiasco experienced by game publishers in the UK. Therefore, consumer relations adequately be maintained at a level that is conducive to both the owners and investors of the Electronics Arts Corporation. The bottom-line is that consumer satisfaction is paramount to any business organization nevertheless the Electronic Arts Corporation.
