Freedom Writers is a movie that lays a lot of society’s problems right out in front of its face. One of the many ideas portrayed throughout the movie was racism. On a daily basis the students in this movie faced racial profiling and discrimination. The movie did a great job of portraying this racism in a school setting. The movie is based in multiracial school in California. The school is severely divided amongst race and many kids are affiliated with gangs. These “troublesome hoodlums” were set up to fail from the beginning based solely on the color of their skin. These kids could have been led down a path that was sure to lead to failure but they were saved by their teacher. Mrs. Gurwell took it upon herself to make it her mission to help these kids succeed. Teachers must have that mindset in all classrooms in every situation if their students are to truly succeed. Schools also must fund all students and push all students to reach their full potential. If students are setup to fail from the beginning they will lose interest and stop applying
