Although “HeLa cells were one of the most important things to happen in the field of medicine within the last hundred years “they were obtained without permission or consent in a fashion that was ethically questionable” (Skloot 4). The women who made all these scientific discoveries possible has been left unnamed in most studies and teachings. “HeLa cells were omnipresent. [we hear] about them in histology, neurology, pathology; [use] them in experiments, but… no one mentioned Henrietta.” (Skloot 5). Basic human rights and ethical issues related to the practice of medicine and the patience’s right to be able to determine course of treatment after being informed of their condition and options play a key role in the process of becoming a competent doctor. Through the use of an interdisciplinary approach to treatment, doctors can enhance the ‘hard’ knowledge that is normally associated with the field of medicine and make it more malleable to the real world and the lives of the people that medicine impacts. The acknowledgement of bioethics allows doctors to think about the socioeconomic and moral complications that are a byproduct of certain medical advancements allowing them to be better doctors because of it. Human cloning is a great example in the sense that technology and medicine have advanced to allow us to make human cloning possible, but with interdisciplinary studies of humanities and the social sciences doctors can predict the problems that may come along with such medical advancements such as genetic damage, psychological complications to the clone, and unpredictable family relations. Comparative methodologies of different fields of studies give doctors a more holistic view of their practice and medicine, allowing them to have better judgment when it comes to making medical decisions that may affect the life of the patient in a more extensive way. These emotional and social complications can not be predicted by patients “charts”, but rather a physician’s knowledge of social and humanitarian studies.
