These environments can include parents who are abusive, on drugs, or ill. This process is controlled by each states department of social services. While the child is in foster care they are allowed and encouraged to remain in contact with their original caretaker. Foster care is supposed to be used as a temporary solution for temporary problems, however if a child’s caretaker fail to change whatever it was that put the child in harm’s way, the child can remain in foster care longer than they were ever intended to. Additionally, this data would be described as discrete, because we are counting how many people are in the system an every year. This data could also be described as interval level data. I would describe it as interval level data because the amounts are meaningful and zero is another point on the scale. The average number of children in foster care between 2004 to 2012 in the nation was about 118,837 with the high year being in 2005 at 135,274 children in the system and the lowest year being 2011 with 101,737 children in the system. In 2005 the state with the largest amount of children in foster care was California with 16,700 children in the system and the lowest state was Wyoming with 103 children in the system. It would make since of California to have the most children in the system in the nation because California has one of the largest populations as well as one of the highest cost of livings which could make it hard to support children, especially if a family member does not have a job or some type of means to support their family.
