rust is seen every day and affects one 's life every day. This is due to the fact that “Iron doesn’t hold onto its electrons very tightly, says Scully, making it the perfect anode for an electrochemical reaction to take place” (Brownlee 2). Skully is a corrosion expert at the university of Virginia (Brownlee 1-2). When metal rusts, the metal atoms lose their electrons to oxygen, which forms a bond between the iron and oxygen creating the compound that is seen in the form of rust (Brownlee 2).“The movement of ions through the electrolyte solution completes the electric circuit that allows the electrons from ion to move from the anode to the cathode” (Brownlee 2). Electrolyte means a substance that dissolves in water making it be able to conduct electricity because of its mobile sea of electrons. This means that water with a dissolved substance such as salt, NaCl, on iron allows the electrons to flow from the metal to oxygen as a kind of …show more content…
Oxidation can even be found in many common household objects. “Batteries make use of redox reactions to produce an electric current. “A flashlight works because the electrons that are transferred from the reductant are made to pass through a lightbulb before they get to the oxidant.” (Whitmire 1). Flash lights get an electrical current from oxidization in a battery to transfer to electrons where light is then given of as oxygen is bonded (Whitmire 1). Another example is “An automobile oxidizes gasoline to make the engine work. Bleach works by oxidizing the molecules that stain clothing.” (Whitmire 1). Engines make use of oxidization as its intake of oxygen bonds with the gasoline which creates pressure to make it work properly (Whitmire 1). When clothing gets stained one puts bleach on it to change its composition and there by not seeing the stain (Whitmire 1). This is by oxidization. The bleach is the cathode that bonds with the stained clothing which is an anode, to create a new compound that no longer looks stained (Whitmire 1). The chemistry of oxidization is seen all around quite often sometimes without even knowing it.
Oxidation comes in many forms, such as rust. However there is a lot to be discovered such as future implications of oxidation could be creating a longer lasting battery through the use of Ph. Or there are new forms of paint being tested that when scratched it will secrete a rust
