The Eclipse Asylums: A Short Story

“Artimus Scott, are you in there?,” said, Mr.T who was the lead artist for their documentary company. As she woke up, she said “be out in twenty,” knowing most likely he had an assignment for her to complete since she had all of the weird and mysterious places to document. When they met up, she got her newest and weirdest assignment to date, known as the Eclipse Asylum. It was known to be abandoned and have a mysterious presence there, although she’s already heard things like that and seen no proof otherwise to state that the supernatural was real. A few days later, as she just arrived at the asylum on a stormy night, she pointed the camera in her face and said, “well this storm makes the place slightly more creepy and we’re almost at the front gate.” Now after walking in the mush, her ambition pushed her to climb the fence. She walked up the steps that were covered in dirty water, and the door slammed shut. She continued trying to open it, but it wouldn’t budge. The wind must’ve hit it so hard that the door got stuck. As she tried to walk around, a bright light hits her for a few seconds and she wonders where it came from but dismisses it because it must’ve been a helicopter flying someone into a nearby hospital. Although it didn't make much sense for it to be there she looked around and saw a ladder to the right. She then proceeded to climb and found an open window. Afterward, Artimus heard a girl say, “I hear him.” Artimus walks in and asks the girl, “who is it you're talking about?” Then the little girl ran and hid in between two bookshelves that had fallen over. Although Artimus couldn’t find her, she decided to carry on and look around for what individual she was talking about. Later, Artimus comes across a room with its door partially opened. …show more content…
Artemis turned around and started to run fast down the hall checking to see if any door is unlocked but found only one. In the unlocked room she hid behind a dresser and a little light shined on a newspaper that read, “Crazy doctor found dead with many of his patients eyes gouged out.” The doctor entered the room pushing the dresser over, and hit Artimus in the head very hard but this gave her a little wiggle room to get past him. As she started to run, the doctor swung at her, hitting her sleeve and ripping it down the middle. When she finally escaped the room, she ran upstairs to the kitchen and when she entered, the smell of rotten and moldy food hit her. She tried to run to the door which lead from the kitchen to a fire escape. Very nervously she tried to open the door and find that to also be locked. Artimus runs to an open window found across the hall. The doctor crept up behind her and hit her. As she climbed out of the window she fell and got knocked unconscious. When she finally awakened, she had no memory of anything that had previously happened, but did remember she had to investigate the asylum. So, she walked to her vehicle and found her camera and proceeded. She continued to repeat the same night

In her introduction to The Best American Essays 1988, Annie Dillard claims that “The essay can do everything a poem can do, and everything a short story can do—everything but fake it.” Her essay “Total Eclipse” easily makes her case for the imaginative power of a genre that is still undervalued as a branch of imaginative literature. “Total Eclipse” has it all—the climactic intensity of short fiction, the interwoven imagery of poetry, and the meditative dynamics of the personal essay: “This was the universe about which we have read so much and never before felt: the universe as a clockwork of loose spheres flung at stupefying, unauthorized speeds.” The essay, which first appeared in Antaeus in 1982 was collected in Teaching a Stone to Talk (1982),…
