We would pass a bunch of farm animals and open fields filled with big round rolls of hay either sitting across or in a straight line from each other. The scenery mainly consisted of clear fields, bright green trees, clear blue skies, bird calls and roaring cars. Sometimes, it would be a rainy day, on our drive up to the big old creaky house out in the middle of nowhere. It took about…
I was thrilled to be escaping from home and traveling to Gatlinburg. The cabin we would be renting was outstandingly gorgeous. I had my own full size bed , couch, and a full bathroom. Unfortunately it is a seven and half hour drive to the cabin from my house so of course we had to find something to do. We saw fifty out of fifty states, two provinces of Canada, and Great Britain license plates and the top three states we saw were Indiana, New York, and Ohio.…
Marana, Arizona- it was a hot summer in 1982, surrounded by desert sands, cactus and Palo Verde trees where two young children of a ranch hand whose curiosity guided them on their lessons in freedom. The morning sun rises and a warm breeze is in the air, the horses are saddled and ready for the new day adventure. A refreshed brown and tan Quarter horse named Ms. Barb is waiting patiently for me, and a paint Palomino horse named ironically Paint is waiting for my brother, Mark. We will rise up to mount on the horses back and venture into the desert for today’s exploration.…
I saw only darkness, save the faint glow of lava rocks in a small hole dug in front of me. I breathe in what should be steaming hot air, but it is dry, yet so hot. Even growing up in Tucson where the summer heat can reach 110 degrees, I’ve never experienced something quite like this. I wished I was playing out in that summer heat, this felt like I was being cooked in an oven. I breathe in again, more dry air.…
I've lived in the Rio Grande Valley my whole life. Ever since I could remember, I had never been outside these valley roads. I had always dreamed about what a vacation would be like. I ustheir ed to have friends all the time tell me about their trips to San Antonio, Houston, and Florida , just to name a few. I came from a lower class family of five so a vacation was never an option for us.…
I have been intellectually challenged my entire life. I entered into the gate program in third grade when I moved to Arizona, and since then I have been excelling academically. One of my favorite traits is that I love to help people in need. I am constantly helping people in my classes who don’t understand the material. One of my least favorite traits is that I can get impatient.…
Two thousand five hundred eighty-seven. I could take an eight-hour flight or a casual thirty-seven-hour drive, but no matter what, I am still two thousand five hundred eighty-seven miles away from my home in New Haven, Connecticut. Being a college freshman, trying to juggle class, homework, projects, studying, sleeping, eating, and athletics; finding the travel time to go home is an almost impossible task. Add in the cost of the $600 flights round trip and there is no chance a student can go visit home when they feel a little homesick. I on the other hand had never even fathomed being homesick from the frozen tundra I called home.…
On September 4th, 15 years ago, I was born. I was born in Duluth, Minnesota and lived in Superior. After living there for 5 years, I moved to Arizona. I lived in Arizona for 3 months. My family realized the weather was just too hot, so we moved back to Hermantown.…
We're driving to Tenaha to go see my aunt, because my dad hasn't seen her over two years. While we are driving we have the radio on listening to Hot Station 96.3, minutes later I hear the sirens going off through the radio. Afterwards I get a text message from my cousin kimberly saying that a Tornadoe is going to hit Shelby County in a half an hour. I show my parents the message kimberly had sent me, and my dad immediately turned around and drove to my uncles house who was the closes, we tell him what's going on. He lets us in his house so we can tke shelter, we quickly gather wood and nails so we can put them against the windows so when the Tornadoe goes by there won't be so many glass broken inside the house.…
The Grand Canyon Our surprise trip to Las Vegas came to an end. Everyone was very mournful. We were on our way back to Arizona. We had just crossed the state border, and then later we had seen signs that said we were close to the Grand Canyon. My parents decided that since we had never been to the Grand Canyon before, then we should go.…
Clomp! Clomp! Clomp! Our boots pound the rocky Colorado trail in the middle of a cold, starry night above the massive tree line with a spectacular view of the lights of Leadville, as we hiked our first 14,000 foot mountain of the summer. Clomp!…
“Why I Chose Southwest” As a homeschooled high school senior, I am unable to take Advanced Placement courses, which are college-level classes taken at a high school. Students earn college credits by taking an exam at the end of the year. To remedy this, I decided to register at Southwest Tennessee Community College for dual enrollment classes. I chose Southwest for a multitude of reasons: to complete my high school education, to provide challenging courses in preparation for college, and to grant me college credit. I opted to take Pre Calculus, English Composition, and Anatomy & Physiology this semester.…
I went on a road trip to Lake Tahoe with my friends the week after graduation in June. We rented a cabin near the lake and spent four nights kayaking, hiking, and exploring different scenic spots throughout the area. My favorite (and scariest!) part of the trip was working up the courage to jump off a 20 foot cliff into the lake. The trip was a great way to wrap up our time at UCLA, and it gave us a chance to hang out together one last time before we went our separate ways.…
It was a beautiful Friday afternoon. The May weather was perfect, with a slight refreshing breeze. Excitement was in the air as we all prepared for the 23 hour drive to Colorado. This was going to be the trip of a life time for our family. This much awaited trip had everyone on the edge of their seats.…
“Then one day, when you least expect it, the great adventure finds you,” stated Ewan Mcgregor. With every adventure comes a story, it might not always end how you want, but adventures create memories to never forget. A couple weeks ago a dear friend of mine and I had an all day adventure, spur of the moment but a day we’ll never forget. We took a road trip to Little Rock, attempted to take a nap, went to the gym and worked-out, then somehow ended up covered in mud from head-to-toe!…
