Utter silence; all that could be heard was the machinations clanks and clangs as it rose up higher and higher. Even though there were five people in it, none of them spoke. One woman kept her eyes trained on her cell-phone, scrolling through an endless feed of videos and tweeted thoughts. The man in the business suit held his body straight at the front of the small space, eyes trained on the door, waiting impatiently. The second woman, who had situated herself at the back of the space, leaned against the wall, trying to make herself as small as possible. She kept her eyes on the ground and her arms pinned at her sides. The teen stood right in front of the buttons, headphones on, looking back and forth across the numbers. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and then again. Lastly, a third woman stood, right in the midst of it all. Her hands were folded neatly against her chest in order to create as much space between herself and the other occupants. …show more content…

A closer look showed that even two people, who were having a conversation while waiting for the elevator, ceased to speak once they began their descent to the ground floor or their ascent to the upper levels. If their conversation did not cease completely, it went on in hushed tones, so as not to disturb the silence in the elevator. Individuals try their best to not invade others personal space, as well. If there are two people in an elevator, they tend to stand on opposite ends of each other. As the number of individuals increases, people tend to shift around and move closer to the walls in order to be as far away from each other as possible. Communication between individuals as well, is extremely sparse. Aside from the occasional “what floor”, “going up”, or “hold the door”, there is little to no conversation or

The British men sat down on a roughly cut wooden bench, while Charles flopped down uncomfortably. The sergeant placed a map and started plotting areas of attack. Charles could hardly pay attention to all the pins and lines. “Charles,” The sergeant spat as the soldier jolted unexpectedly, “You are on duty in the trench! Dale Hathaway, you will accompany him.”…

The earth beneath their feet had long since morphed into oozing, black mud that sucked at their feet and legs. The pounding of artillery shells, the booming of massive guns, the sharp crack of rifles, and the smell of gunpowder were without pause. Blood-splattered bodies were sprawled on the trenches. The screams of agony and the earth-shattering crashes of shells would be enough to drive even the most stalwart to insanity.…

“Wait… I was under the impression that all infected areas been quarantined at this point,” Governor Lewis proclaimed. Everyone at the table kept their mouths shut, as they felt an intensity that would soon escalate into power struggle steadily increasing. “Governor!” Hanes said, sternly as he raised his voice back at Lewis while pounding his fist on the conference table. “This sickness has covered two major cities, several states, scores of counties, and a myriad of townships and municipalities throughout the northeastern corridor in less than a week.…

Bullets whizzed overhead hell-bent on hitting their targets. James pressed himself against the mud wall of the trench, as if by doing so it would take him away from the corner of hell that his old naive self had willingly entered. Allied planes tore through the open sky with kamikazes right on their tails. Gaping holes left in the ground by heavy artillery were full with stagnant water and the rotting corpses of dead soldiers, their weapons bent and rusted displaying a haunting past that time wouldn't forget.…

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK 1942 Steve sat quietly, hands tucked in his lap in the poorly-lit theater. For about 20 minutes, the white sheet had broadcasted war propaganda: little boys pulling dirty red wagons missing wheels, collecting scraps of metal for the war effort, soldiers hiding in ditches, clutching helmets to their heads and rifles to their chests, the sound of bombs exploding and tanks firing seemingly unnecessarily loud in Steve’s ears. A booming voice described the terrors soldiers faced in the battlefield, and it was so graphic and in so much detail that Steve felt he was there to fight with them. He almost forgot what he went there to see in the first place. Steve was mesmerized by the scene, like the way unwanted tears swell up in…

He looked at me, and I looked at him. I looked at him, and he looked at me.…

“No Man’s Land’ For about an hour that day, the battlefield was tranquil. Both sides anticipated the opponents’ next move, the next shell to be fired, the next gas attack, the next bullet to pierce the skull of a friend. The war had been nightmarish, seeming like it could never end and the fighting would never stop. William took this brief moment of standoff to think of his wife, Elizabeth, and their soon to be daughter, who had been carrying him for 4 months already. The old man sat alone in his tin hut, staring at the hard dirt floor beneath his feet. It was all he had known for the past few years, ever since he became a Rat of Tobruk. He thought back to that fateful day when he joined the Australian Army, full of youthful enthusiasm and patriotism. But now, as he sat in his worn out uniform, his body ravaged by the years of war, he wondered if it had all been worth it. He had fought in the deserts of North Africa, enduring scorching heat and constant attacks from the enemy.…
