9/11 Narrative Analysis

The idea of a narrative is to tell a story, the events occurring on the day of September 11, 2001 will provide an opportunity to relay my feelings, moving beyond the initial pure and basic anger at those responsible for such a desperate act. The image shows two emergency responders in the cloud of debris left by the collapse of the Trade Centers and what drew me to this picture is what they must have been talking about. The questions and issues I initially considered included: the loss of life; the tremendous devastation; and are there more survivors, where these possibilities could only be confirmed by talking to the individuals in the picture. Instead, I decided that the picture will be used as a metaphor to relay my awareness of the incident, …show more content…
As two fully loaded commercial airliners crashed into the World Trade Center Towers, the gasoline from the air craft eventually broke the structures and they collapsed, killing thousands of victims and causing wide spread injuries. The picture of the two firemen who appear to be males and wearing traditional protective uniforms and shielding suggest that the picture was taken 1-2 days post event, where I suspect the distance to the crater that was left behind does not appear to concern or bother them. Also, from my perspective they do not appear to be on alert, fearing secondary attacks where after the initial attacks there was fear that there would be additional coordinated attacks and responses in the city, but I believe that their relaxed postures relays that they are out of immediate danger and can fully take in the …show more content…
My limited knowledge of the event, which has evolved through access of documentaries, and news shows have provided me with a foundational understanding of the attack and the pivotal roles that the emergency services played both during the attack and in the aftermath of the event. As I review the picture, it suggests a comradery between the two firemen in the devastation and terrible loss of life.In viewing the picture and seeing the dust which is literally setting on the site, a series of questions emerged in my mind including: how can you respond to people who are willing to kill themselves in supporting terrorist beliefs? Is there any true protection from those who would murder children and women to draw attention to themselves and their cause? No, it is my belief that you can only work to minimize the damage and prepare for the worst case scenarios. As the image shows, there are people who are willing to put themselves in harm’s way to provide help and assistance both during and in the aftermath. I believe this is one of the greatest aspects of this image, where regardless of ethnicity, gender, our cultural beliefs, we were all Americans on that day, responding to the needs of their fellow Americans who were senselessly cut down by a foreign threat. “Debunking the 9/11 Myths: Special Report” and “The Conspiracy Industry: Afterword to PM Expanded Investigation” are two articles both written for the Popular Mechanics magazine by James B. Meigs, the latter being written in 2006, one year after the former. “Debunking the 9/11 Myths: Special Report” is an in-depth analysis of conspiracy theories surrounding the 9/11 attacks and the factual evidence that refutes these theories. “The Afterword” is a reflective piece that describes the uprising of the conspiracy theory community after the first article was published, and then poses the argument as to why conspiracy theorists have an “illusion of coherence”. The first article published by Meigs garnered a lot of attention from the conspiracy theory…

So, they went back inside and sat there until they were called about 40 minutes later. By then, one of the towers had fallen and they knew that this was terrorism. When they got in the helicopter, my dad started putting in the address of where they were going. When he looked outside, he stopped putting in the address; they did not need it because they could see the thick, black smoke from the Pentagon. “There was not a cloud in the sky, not an airplane anywhere.”…

When installing spray foam to the World Trade Center, the installer could potentially have the inability to see certain areas. On October 1st, 2002, Roger G. Morse, a licensed architect from New York, said “The installer may be unable to reach or see certain areas of the trusses that must be covered. This frequently results in thin or absent fireproofing on surfaces hidden from the floor by the bottom of steel members” (Morse). Morse said that the fireproofing was poorly applied which resulted in the growth of the fire from the jet-line. Therefore, people in the tower were badly burned.…

Captain John “Jay” Jonas, in his 20-plus years of committing his life for others in the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), came across the toughest; most tiresome day of his entire career, September 11th, 2001. When the four successfully hijacked airplanes scattered throughout the United States, two planes targeted the two tallest buildings in New York City at the time. When the first plane hit the North tower, Jay Jonas and his group of five other Firefighters, nicknamed the Dragon Fighter because of their base’s location in Chinatown. When Jonas and his crew sped to a “Ten-sixty” catastrophic fire, they were astonished at the site of an impact fire, ignited from plane fuel, on a 99 floor building. School children’s drawing honored them” (12). The responders were not just appreciated by fellow first responders, the whole New York state and nationally celebrated the bravery they showed. Another thing it showed is that they made an impact on people all over. The politicians did not sacrifice anything for the attack compared to the first responders. Burke compared the responders to Navy Seals, “‘I feel that the Navy Seals walked in the steps of my brother and all of the other first responders of 9/11,’ I told him.…

Asultany exhibits the ways in which media has shaped the image of Muslims and Arabs after the events of 9/11. (CITA) Asultany explains that Television shows can be an influential way that information and events are conveyed to a nation and how they can shape the way the audience perceives that information. (CITATION) This relates to terrorism and the portrayal of Muslims and Arabs, because during the years after the events of 9/11, TV shows became a crucial way that American citizens saw and talked about the state of emergency that the United States was under. This is an issue because TV shows claim that their storylines and the information they present is for dramatic and entertainment purposes, however audiences often take the information…
