Hook - Try to envision an infamous organization that was known for slaughtering hundreds of thousands of innocent people. Men, women, and children alike. This organization committed hundreds of hate crimes against innocent individuals simply because they shared different moral values and beliefs. I am sure many of you are thinking that “ISIS” fits this description, but the organization that I am talking is Catholic Church in the eleventh century.…
The First Crusade, also the most successful, began with the speech of Pope Urban II at Clermont on 27 November 1095, and was initially a response to the request for armed aid against the Turks made by the Byzantine Emperor Alexius I. However, its purpose quickly shifted and it in turn became the largest mass pilgrimage of the eleventh century, though it differed from all the others in once crucial respect, in that it was, at the same time, a war, one set against what was by some referred to as the ‘savagery of the Saracens’. Though there is a certain level of difficulty in defining what a crusade was in regards to the use of the word by the medieval people , a related question that gives a substantial amount of insight into what constituted a crusade involves the motivations that the knightly elite who answered Urban II’s call to arms had for taking the cross.…
Dry, hot days and nights. The sun beat on the backs of the Crusaders who were desperate for any moisture, draft or shade. The heat was so unbearable it had prevented them from sweating and was causing some of the Crusaders to overheat and perish (Britannica School Library-Battle of Hattin). To make matters worse the only available fresh water, had dried up (Crusades: The Illustrated History, Thomas Madden). A faint thundering sound began sound.…
Throughout history there have been numerous wars started because of the need to help others from living under a supposed harsh regime and save them from being persecuted because of their race, religion or class. Many of these types of wars have been unsuccessful in achieving this goal and only one notable, historical crusade has done this and has succeeded, but at a price. There hasn’t been a movement more momentous than the First Crusade. The First Crusade was a pilgrimage turned military expedition to Jerusalem that was sponsored by Pope Urban II at the Council of Clement in November 1095 in the aspiration to set out from the west to the recover the holy city from the hands of the Muslims. The aim of this paper is to examine the causes…
A crusader, clad in thick leather armour, branded with a red cross, charges forward towards the Muslim army, which is defending their city of Jerusalem. War cries sound from both armies as a bloodbath is about to ensue. The crusader uses his The Middle ages were an era of brutal power struggles that would form the modern world. The First Crusade was a Christian attempt at regaining Jerusalem, the Holy Land. It stemmed further than this, however.…
The Third Crusade was recognized as one of the most belligerent, unsettled disputes in the books of history. This religious movement transpired in the Middle East, when the Muslims reclaimed the Holy Land, compelling the Christians to fight back. Not many good things happened in this movement, since many people had died from fighting each other. King Richard I was known as the chief leader of the Christians, while Saladin was perceived as the sultan of the Muslim people. These men were known as some of the best Medieval leaders of their time, instigating both of their names to be mentioned repeatedly in the history of the Crusades for centuries to come.…
“I see myself and many artists like me as the torchbearers through these dark ages”.- John Zorn. The Middle Ages have been said to be a transition period between great accomplishments. During this time the Catholic Church became the most powerful of the time and they kept people “in the dark” about religion and they kept the text of the church in Latin which meant not very many people could understand what was being said. There are at least three reasons the Middle Ages are appropriately referred to as the “Dark Ages”. According to The American Cyclopaedia, the Middle Ages have historically been referred to as the “Dark Ages”.…
The Knight was a man who followed the crowds into a crusade and came out alive. But, that was never his goal. Back in the times of the crusades, the Pope had mandated that any person that dies on a crusade have immediate acceptance into heaven. The Knight, compelled by the Popes mandate, set off on a quest with no intentions of returning. But, he survived and was then stuck with Death at his heels with no guarantee of heaven.…

The portrayal of the Crusades in the film Kingdom of Heaven is above all an oversimplified, romanticised, version of a very serious part of history. The four main Crusades were nothing to reduce in importance, each one left thousands dead and only fueled the divide between Christians and Muslims. To begin the characters themselves were real people but in the film they are severely altered: Balian is the combination of several historical figures (such as his own brother), Sybilla was actually madly in love with her husband Guy and never had an affair with Balian, Godfrey was not a real person, and Baldwin V was not murdered by his mother. The only redemption (for me at least) was how Saladin was portrayed in this film, in the film he is portrayed…

After watching this documentary, I would say this was an accurate, short summary of the history of the Crusades. This film was written before 9/11 which is why it probably appears to be accurate and less bias compared to ones later produced. What’s conveniently nice about this film compared to others is that it solely focuses on the facts. We can see the actual history for what it is and nothing more. Islam and Christianity are revealed and there are no blind covers.…
