In the Marine Corp we learned that there is no way to cheat being a Marine, you either earn it or you don’t. One of the core values of a Marine is courage and it is ingrained in us to always maintain the courage to do the right thing. Integrity and ethics boils down to this simple truth, it is how you behave when you are not being watched versus what actions you take when someone else can see what you are doing. If you have a solid moral compass and understand right from wrong, then even when no one is looking, it will cause pain to do the wrong thing. The emotions that result from making a wrong decision will be uncomfortable, albeit stress, guilt or anguish. It just bothers you that you took the wrong path. Not all aspects of life are like that. To make matters worse, we live in a society that rarely shames the shortcut and is somewhat commonplace to find ways to beat the system. Take for example videogames. There are countless websites and books on cheats, tricks and tips to beat the game. It has become a contest of sorts to hack life and find the easy-fast method of doing things.
