In the book the color purple, Alice Walker creates the character through self discovery and love through the descriptive journal entries of Celie growing up into a woman. This story is narrated by Celie, a character unsure of who she is truly and who she can trust.
In the beginning, Celie is a controlled young girl at the age of fourteen crippled by the weight of the world on her shoulders. After her mother dies she is even more afraid and has even bigger responsibilities. Celie’s first experience with love comes from her relationship with her little sister, whom she fiercely protects, even though it means sacrificing her own well being. For most of her life Nettie is the only person she loves. Celie shares a sisterly love with Nettie, the interesting thing about the love is that Celie also acts like a mother figure to Nettie. When Celie’s babies are taken away from her by her father Nettie fills the void that is left in Celie’s heart. Celie feels obligated to take care of Nettie since they no longer have a mother. She experiences romantic love for the first time with a woman. In the rising action, when Shug and Celie first meet Shug is nothing like what Celie had made her out to be. Shugs first words to Celie was “you sure is ugly”. They get to know each other more and they grow closer to one another. Celie open up to Shug and Shug finds out the true nature of Mr. and Celie’s marriage. She now knows how Celie is really treated by Mr. and they grow closer.
