This article, written by Giuseppe Benagiano, was written in response to Robert Edwards after he won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2010. Benagiano writes primarily about how the Catholic church feels about Edwards being named the winner. Edwards won the prize after he had developed In vitro Fertilization, or IVF. The catholic teachings go against what Edwards created and Benagiano writes about the conflicting views. Each author creates their own tone in their writings but overall these articles have a similar sound. There is an overall scholarly tone in all of the articles that allows the reader to understand that the articles are written by respected people in the field. The main way the authors have developed this tone is by using a certain word choice. Ford uses phrases such as, “the bible shows” and “philosophical reasoning also supports” (1,3). In the article, “Robert G Edwards and the Roman Catholic Church”, Benagiano talks about the criticisms of IVF and the position of the Roman Catholic Church (2,4). These short, effective phrases display to the reader that the author has done his or her research and knows what he or she is talking about. The overall word choice that the authors chose has an impact of the tone of the pieces. Each piece has chosen words and phrases that are very blunt and are without personal opinions. The authors did this because the topic of IVF and anything to do with family planning is a sensitive topic for most people. By using straightforward wording, the authors are able to bring less to no emotion in the articles and try to appeal to a bigger audience.
