After they decided to become a group, The Chordettes started singing on the local music circuit in Sheboygan. Originally, the girls used to sing folk songs but with Jinny Osborn and her father’s influence, they switched to harmony singing. According to Mentalitch.com, in 1949, they got their big break when they won on Arthur Godfrey’s radio talent show Talent Scouts. The Chordettes became regulars on Godfrey’s popular tv show, singing in their harmonious, a cappella style. The main songs that people know especially from today, is “Mr.Sandman”, and “Lollipop”. The girls signed with Columbia Records and made their first album called “Harmony Encores” and when they were on the show, Godfrey’s musical director and orchestra leader turned out to be Archie Bleyer, who had established his own new label called Cadence Records. That led up to The Chordettes becoming one of the label’s first and best artists. Along with meeting Godfrey, he also became Janet Ertel’s husband around the time. The song “Lollipop” sung by Ronald & Ruby, The Chordettes were far more successful singing their version of the song, which was written by Beverly Ross and Julius Dixson. It became the Chordettes’ final Top Ten hit, and their best-performing single as well. It went to #2 on the pop singles chart, and even climbed as high as #3 on the R&B charts. Besides those extremely well known songs, the girls made more songs and everyone loved and still loves their music to this
