One reason my supervisors excel at being a leader is how personable and caring they are. They truly understand the pressure of being a student so they strive for us to reach our goals to be the best people we can be. So, how do they accomplish this? They do this by challenging us to improve as a student and as an adult to become better people for our communities. We have bi-weekly meetings in which I talk about life goals, class goals, and my personal life; that mean a lot to me. With these meetings it gives me a since of belonging- it makes me feel like I have a purpose and it really motivates me to improve to become a better person. I just recently went on a leadership retreat and we discussed how important it is to be a leader with a passionate heart. As a leader it is important to understand whom we are leading or we will not get the highest possible outcome from them. For example, if I don’t understand the needs of my residents how will I be able to effectively do my job to ensure that their experience is the best possible. Also, by leading this way, it will make people feel like I do when my supervisor talks with me. I have been an RA for two years and it can be stressful… very stressful. Being a Hall Director (my boss’s title) is a bit different than a director in a corporation because Hall Directors are supervising students between the ages of nineteen twenty three, whereas most directors in corporations are managing much older individuals with a different mind set and goals. As a Hall Director they have to ensure that students are safe and RA’s (me) are doing their jobs to ensure the safety of students. For example, many students are young and a few can make very stupid choices. I encountered a situation that involved many students and alcohol that led to fights. Having to deal with this situation, the police, the paper work, and making sure everything was taken care of in the right way was stressful. On top of all that I had a large exam the next day. All I wanted to do was sleep, but I needed to study. The next day I went to my boss and I was able to vent to her and she was able calm me down and made me realize that everything was going to be okay as well as ensured me that I was doing a great job. It is very important for a leader to make sure they are always telling their employees they are doing a great job, and actually meaning it. Not only is it important for a Hall Director to ensure the safety of everyone on campus they have to be sure that the people that work for them are being taken car of because that is the source of ensuring students’ safety. My bosses are very good at ensuring and teaching me to make educated choices in my life. As I was taking Behavior in Organizational Behavior we talked about the Rational Choice Decision-Making Process. It was a coincidence because during our RA Spring training we had a session on the Rational Choice Decision-Making Process. I remember talking about the steps
