Another instance in the play where this situation is seen, is during the encounter of Mercutio and Tybalt. Mercutio constantly taunts Tybalt, and taking offence to everything he is saying, soon resulting in a clash between them. During the swordfight, Romeo tries his best to break apart the two, but actually causes the death of Tybalt in return. In a panic, Romeo cries, “Tybalt, Mercutio, the Prince expressly hath/ Forbid this bandying in Verona streets. / Hold, Tybalt! Good Mercutio! [Tybalt under Romeo’s arm stabs Mercutio, then flies with his followers.] I am hurt.” (III, i, 87-89).
