In this essay we will discuss the definition of worship, look at Martin Luther King as a significant Christian in history who has contributed to the discipline and what this means for us individually, corporately and also in a small group setting. We will also look at Catholicism and their understanding and belief of Worship and the significance it has to their Denomination.

To me worship is an act of surrender, giving of my time and of myself to praise and thank God for all He has done, is going to do and giving of adoration and wonder to our loving eternal and only perfect Father.

The Catholic Worship Service: The Mass for Dummies explains their understanding of worship as” the formal, official worship service of Catholicism, is the most important and sacred act of worship in the Catholic Church. Going to Mass is the only way a Catholic can fulfil the Third Commandment to keep holy the Sabbath day and the only regular opportunity to receive the Holy Eucharist.”
The Mass incorporates the Bible (Sacred Scripture), prayer, sacrifice, hymns, symbols, gestures, sacred food for the soul, and directions on how to live a Catholic life — all in one ceremony.
An individual experience
Haley Barton writes in Invitation to solitude & Silence, “your desire for God and your capacity to connect with God as a human soul is the essence of who you are” . My individual experience of worship is just a big sense of the presence and Sovereignty of God, releasing my concerns and burdens to God and just drawing my attention on God. Standing in his awe and beauty with also the amazement of how far he has brought me and saved my life from the increasing disaster it was to the freedom and identity I live in now. I feel lighter and happy and re-energised and I can come out of a dark time with the reminder that anything is possible with God, I just have to trust and allow myself to be fully vulnerable to him.

This is a time where all the believers or brothers and sisters in Christ can meet, worship and celebrate The Lord Jesus together and cheer each other on, while also hearing from the word of God and being challenged by his word.
Reflection on original ideas
Adele Ahlberg Calhoun’s book Spiritual Disciplines Handbook defines worship as worship happens whenever we intentionally cherish God and value Him above all else in life. Worship reveals what is important to us.
My original thoughts are similar to the definition of worship according to Adele. Encouraging the practise of this discipline
In Adele Ahlberg Calhoun’s Spiritual disciplines hand book she writes “Disciplines of worship put us in a place to be receptive and responsive to the Holy Spirit’s movements and invitations”.
I believe the more we practise worship whether it’s in our individual lives as well as a group or corporately, we open ourselves up more to God and we are in tune with what he desires for us. By making this a regular discipline our lives we are allowing room for Holy Spirit to come and make changes and regularly cast our burdens on to
