Liesel is first skeptical about Hans and Rosa Hubermann. She then begins to warm up to the Hubermanns and adapt to her new life. Leisel frequently has nightmares and Hans plays the accordion to comfort her. He is also a house painter. She makes a friend, Rudy, who is also her neighbor. Rudy is very fond of Liesel and truly cares for her. Throughout the novel, he tries kissing her, but she of course refuses every time. They both attend Hitler Youth and usually race down the streets. Leisel wants to read the book she stole at the graveyard, but does not know how to. Hans teaches her the alphabet and she begins to read. Together they read through the book. In Germany at this time, war is breaking out and food and work is becoming slim. This is a hard time in history for the people. The townspeople host a book burning festival to celebrate the birth of Hitler. Once again, Liesel sneakily steals a book from the fire. Rosa then needs Liesel to deliver laundry to her customers. Liesel then must deliver laundry to Ilsa Hermann, the mayor’s wife. Liesel is uneasy about this, because Ilsa had watched Leisel steal the book. In Ilsa’s study, there are books all along the walls, and Liesel is indeed intrigued at this. Ilsa then offers a book to Liesel to read. Hans agrees to take in Max Vandenburg, a Jew, and hide him in his basement. Max’s dad gave up his life to save Hans, so Hans owes Max’s family a favor. Max stays in Liesel’s room, and she becomes curious about him and befriends Max. They then must store Max in the basement so no one sees him in the house. She learns that they have stuff in common. She tells Max about the weather and frequently brings him snow from outside. Max then turns ill and falls into a coma. Liesel still brings him gifts to his bed, like a description of the weather. When Max is in a coma, death visits Himmel Street but does not collect his soul. Liesel and Rudy then sneak into the mayor’s wife house and Liesel steals another book that she chooses particularly, because it reminds her of her and Max’s repeating dream. The Hermann’s are scared people will be suspicious so they arrange plans if Max dies. This saves the family food. In March, Max miraculously wakes up and Rosa visits Liesel’s school to tell her the good news. Death then collects the souls of five hundred people who died in a bombing, but he knows there are worst events that will occur.
