“Which one of you’s the bitch?” (Stephen Baxter, Proxima) “Bitch” is a word that has existed in derogatory language since the fourteenth century. During its earliest use it was a shameful word for women. For some, being referred to as a “bitch” is a demeaning term, for others its empowering. Where did this word come from and how is it that people can decide what it means to them? Originating from the word “Bicce” in Old English, its meaning had been “female dog.” Until the 1300’s when bitch first began being used in its insulting form. It’s was then in reference to a woman’s frequent, sexual behavior. Much like a dog in heat. The term’s existence remained prominent throughout the following centuries although its meaning altered with time. During the 1920’s bitch began to transform as its popularity boomed. It made a stronger appearance in media texts and much of that had to do with the American novelist Ernest Hemingway. Hemmingway’s use of the word had …show more content…
Best friends may throw the word around to each other in endearment. Some women empower one another with the term while others use it to shame. Feeble-minded men continue to spew their hate at women with the word and some men even lash at each other with the intent of lowering egos. With the rise of the feminist movement, and the re-appropriated appearance its made in pop-culture and television, bitch has become something young women strive to be. Especially a “bad bitch.” Bitch has played a significant role in my vocabulary since I learned its negative meaning. I, myself have used it in various ways, for the most part when I’m livid. It has also been a word that I’ve been curious about. Questions like “what did bitch originally mean,” have crossed my mind. Perplexed by its differing meanings I felt urged to educate myself on the word and what I’m really saying so often. The history and evolution of the word is quite remarkable, and I’ll ensure that I don’t stop saying

It is thought to have come about as a mispronunciation of the word “negro” by southerners in the 19th century, but has progressed into an extremely derogatory racial slur. In the 1800s, it was primarily used to demean black slaves, with the underlying implication that they were worth little to nothing, dead or alive, being far inferior to the whites. Rufus, a young white male being raised by an abusive slaveholding father and selfishly extravagant mother in the early 1800s, ignorantly uses this term to describe Dana. During his early years, Dana, in her short moments spent with Rufus due to her unexpected time traveling, does her best to explain the wrongs of such derogatory terms to him. She is somewhat successful with him as a child, but once he reached young adulthood, his father begins to have a larger influence on him.…

The situation that occurs here is one that we are all familiar with throughout the U.S; when a black person and a white person get into an argument and it escalates to fast and ends with a gun pointed at the black person. It all started when Addison, white male, was singing along to a song with the n-word and Reggie, black male, asked him to not say it again but he insisted on why he couldn’t say it if it was part of the song and he thought it felt weird if he censored himself. But then it escalated when Kurt comes over and says “Reggie getting in a fight about racism” sarcastically and also told Addison if he didn’t want anything destroyed in a riot then hide it; meaning that blacks are always the ones to commit an act of violence but that’s not always the case. Addison was basically called a racist for using the n-word and I understand why because of the roots of the word. I can relate this to the reading “There are Bitches and Hoes” by Tricia Rose because she discusses when some women participate, whether it is in behaviors, starring in a rapper’s video, or even signing along in the car, it is pointing to women’s cooperation with sexism and that behaving in a hyper sexual way is for some women the only mean to making any gains at all (Rose, 2015, pp.…

When most people think of feminism, they think of the social justice warriors that go after anyone and everyone for the slightest comment. While there are some people out there that are the extremes of the group, technically these people cannot be classified as a feminist, even if they identify that way. Most of the time these people are going after men for something that they said, even if they didn’t mean it harshly. They seem to hate men themselves, this is called misandry. While I believe that reclaiming sexually pejorative words may lead to positive outcomes such as a heightened sense of sexual empowerment; I don’t believe that the process is particularly effective in combating the core issues behind slut shaming. In fact, we learned in Lecture 14, that the resignification of words like “slut” has limited benefits. Although true that due to the resignification process, the word may now have some positive connotations and does not generate the same degree of policing that it once had, the process has not eliminated the sexual double standard nor the consequences of female sexual agency. I believe that the reason is because slut shaming does not exist merely because there are colorful words and expressions to…
