“Shared Environment (SE) refers to any factors that make siblings residing in the same family similar” (Bergin, 2012, p.16). The effects of this factor contribute to delinquency, alcohol abuse, and college attendance. “Non-shared Environment (NSE) refers to factors that make siblings in the same family different from each other” (Bergin, 2012, p.16). Even though siblings may be in living in the same environment, each child is going to have their own friends and peers, which are a big influence on the individual. With the part of the environment that is shared, siblings may develop the same qualities when it comes to disciplinary features, however, because the siblings are also independent individuals, they may not be influenced in the exact same way. It includes the stages of development before the child reaches school. So at home, the child should learn about what behavior is right and wrong, and they should learn that it is important to listen to the rules. If children do not have rules and consequences in the home environment, then I believe that they will have a very hard time in the classroom. They will be expected to listen and follow the rules, and if they break a rule, disciplinary actions will take place. If a child is not accustomed to this, then there can be difficult situations for the teachers, parents and students.
