The Benchmark Family
The benchmark family applies to Gil and Karen’s family. Gil is the breadwinner father who is having trouble receiving a promotion at work that he wants throughout the movie. In the scene where he tells Karen he quits his job and she tells him she’s pregnant when he’s leaving she asks him if he have to. He replies that everything in his life is a have to. Gil has the responsibility of providing for the family financially and it’s going to be an extra hassle for him since they will be having another child. When Larry starts discussing a new business and the mother past a comment he comes to his defense. The mother tells Larry something about his new business being another get rich fast schemes and the father tells her nothing is wrong with getting rich fast. After that Larry and Frank was in the garage looking at an old school car he was working on and he ask his dad for money to get his business started and Frank gives it to him without a problem. Halfway through the movie Larry takes the father car because he was going to sell it, but he couldn’t without his father paperwork. The father kicks him out and then he decides to tell the father that he needs help paying the bookers their $26,000 or they were going to kill him. Frank comes up with a plan that Larry didn’t agree with. He was going to pay every month on it along as Larry worked under him for a while then take over and also attend meetings for gambling. Frank knew that he wanted to retire soon and that paying on Larry debt would push him back a couple of years, but he didn’t mind because that was his son. In the end Larry said he had received a call about platinum in Chile as a new business and was going to try that at first. He asks the father for money to start this new business even though he owe money to bookers and the father still gives him money. Larry also leaves his son with Cool and the father just tells him don’t worry about it. Frank allows Larry to do what every he wants and he sees nothing wrong with the things he does.
