Response on Dave Barry’s “Batting Clean-Up and Striking Out” Glancing around my bedroom, I observe clean floors and homework assignments sprawled out on the table as my jumbled written thoughts are on the brink of being thrown away. My collection of books is lined up neatly on a shelf along with the stuffed animals my grown-up self does not play with anymore. I can hear down the stairs and I listen to the television playing the Cleveland Brown’s football game and the microwave signaling the finished result of the leftover brisket that was in the refrigerator. In Dave Barry’s essay, “Batting Clean-Up and Striking Out,” he explains that the majority of women fasten their focus on the unimportant aspects of life such as cleaning; yet through the…

Just like in baseball, Exercise Science is expanding in more than one aspect. While baseball is expanding in technology with instant replay, higher quality cameras, and advanced radar guns, Exercise Science is expanding their use of technology with the use of force plates, high speed cameras, reflective markers, and motion analysis to analyze movements of baseball players. Baseball has increased the amount of aspects that can be measured of the game, like batted ball velocity, the value of a player, movement of a pitch and its spin rate, and velocity of any ball thrown on the field. Exercise Science has increased the amount of measurements that can be taken in a wide range of areas, like the mobility of the shoulder, force and momentum produced from the lower body during the pitching motion, angular acceleration and torque of the trunk during the motions of pitching and batting, and even the measurements of muscles, especially those of the rotator cuff, responsible for stability of the shoulder joint. As years go on, technology becomes more advanced, including in baseball and Exercise Science, and the use of that technology becomes more practical, which can then be used to calculate more measurements.…
