While on the surface of the Moon, the astronauts set up several experiments, photographed the lunar surface, collected samples of lunar soil and rock, and took core samples from the Moon’s crust. The several experiments included Solar Wind Composition, Laser Ranging Retroreflector, Passive Seismic Experiment, and Lunar Dust Detector. The Solar Wind Composition Experiment was carried out to determine the chemical composition of the wind. The Laser Ranging Retroreflector was carried out to calculate the distance from the Moon to the Earth. The Passive Seismic Experiment studied the propagation of seismic waves through the Moon and provided the most detailed look at the Moon’s internal surface. Finally, the Lunar Dust Detector measured the dust layer deposition. These several experiments, including many others, provided information and guidelines that would be beneficial for the design of future lunar surface experiments and the study of the Moon. The Apollo 11 influenced American culture in many ways, for many began to look to the Moon for new opportunities. It created a love for space for many, especially those at younger ages. Christopher Flournoy, a five-year-old at the time, recalled his experience of the mission. At the time it occured he may not have understood much of what took place but he was still excited by the experience. He said, “I remember my father saying that he was never more proud of being an American than on the day our flag flew on the Moon” (Flournoy, 2017, p.1). The mission peaked a higher interest in space programs and space in general. In addition to this, the Apollo 11 created …show more content…
The mission successfully and safely landed American men on the Moon. Many new discoveries were made on the Moon from experimentation and observation. These discoveries and experiences paved the way for future experiments and ideas. The influence on scientific research and education was very significant. The face of space exploration was changed forever that day. Even the face of American history was changed that very moment three men were lifted off the surface of the Earth and took their first steps on a new planetary body. The legacy of the Apollo 11 lunar landing can still be seen today in the culture of
