He was involved on a mission that would change the world forever. The influence and primary objective of this mission was created by President John F. Kennedy on May 25, 1961. The Apollo 11 mission was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. The mission carried three astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins, to the Moon. The first steps on the Moon were taken by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, with Michael Collins commanding the module. The Apollo 11, the first manned Moon landing, had a significant effect on America, changing its culture and carving a path of discovery in the realms of science. The Apollo 11 mission successfully landed men on the Moon and brought them back to Earth. The mission launched from Cape Kennedy on July 16, 1969, carrying Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. The three-stage 363-foot rocket used 7.5 million pounds of thrust to propel the three men into space. While in flight, the crew made two televised broadcasts. They also made a third transmission, when they drew closer to the Moon, revealing its surface. On July 20, Armstrong and Aldrin entered the “Eagle”, the lunar module, and separated from the “Columbia”, the Command Service Module, to head towards the surface of the Moon. The Eagle touched down on the Moon’s Sea of Tranquility, a large basaltic region. “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed,” Armstrong said as he notified Houston of their successful landing. Armstrong and Aldrin completed a required check and then decided to explore the Moon. The two men placed a United States flag on the surface of the Moon. On July 24, the Apollo 11 safely splashed down in the Pacific Ocean. The Laser Ranging Retroreflector was carried out to calculate the distance from the Moon to the Earth. Finally, the Lunar Dust Detector measured the dust layer deposition.
