A time when one of the seven wonders was built, the Pyramids of Giza. The pyramids are located on the West Bank of the Nile River. The oldest and largest of the three pyramids is ‘the Great Pyramid.’ The Great Pyramid was built for Khufu, second of eight kings during the Fourth Dynasty. Three small pyramids were built for Khufu’s queens next to the Great Pyramid. The middle pyramid of Giza was built for Khufu’s son, Kahfre. Beni Hasan, a small village on the east bank of the Nile is where the rock-cut tombs were constructed. On the faces of cliffs the chambers were carved from solid rock. A typical tomb contained an entrance, main hall and a shrine. Also within the tomb were reliefs, paintings and other objects designed to protect the well being of the individual in perpetuity. The New Kingdom is defined as a time were the Egyptians worshiped their gods, Pharaohs. Because of this, many temples were built to worship and praise Pharaohs. One of the most well known being the Karnak Temple. Karnak is a city of temples that was dedicated to the Theban gods, Amun, Mut, and Khonsu.
