The ritual of Thanksgiving is important because without it, it would just be another meal shared with family. Melanie Wallendorf and Eric J. Arnould’s “Thanksgiving Consumption Rituals” demonstrates the different ritualistic aspects of the day. Wallendorf and Arnould look at how the meal is eaten, what everyone eats, and ultimately what all that means in relation to the holiday. One aspect that is seen as an important part of the ritual is resolution. “Resolution is guided but not dictated by the emic ideology of Thanksgiving Day as a celebration of family togetherness” (Wallendorf 18). Family togetherness is how the entire family not just mom and dad, but extended as well including friends come together on this day. Family togetherness is capable of alleviating the stress and tensions that come up on the holiday. Such that when mom forgets to put a certain ingredient in the pie the family will act as if the pie is the best ever (Wallendorf 18). Through resolution, which is being able to solve issue in a calm and peaceful matter without a lot of fighting or arguing. The fact that political views differ will make the day become something out of a soap opera. This year is different because typically it is conversations had in the family of different political views, now it is that no matter the view the election happened and it is hitting everyone differently. While some people in the family may be very happy others could be devastated for what this means for their lives. Instead of it being a day of togetherness and family it could be about political debates.
