Thanksgiving Consumption Rituals

Every year the United States celebrates Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November. This is a day when families come together to give thanks for what they have over a bountiful meal. When referring to this year’s Thanksgiving some headlines have read, “Get Ready for the Worst Thanksgiving Ever”, “Election fallout will probably ruin your Thanksgiving Dinner”, and “Will Trump and Clinton divide families at Thanksgiving”. The thought is that due to the election people’s Thanksgiving will be torn apart, since this election’s results were taken harder than any other. People took the outcome much more personal because it was not what people expected and will have more of a lasting effect on people’s lives than previous elections. Some families …show more content…
The ritual of Thanksgiving is important because without it, it would just be another meal shared with family. Melanie Wallendorf and Eric J. Arnould’s “Thanksgiving Consumption Rituals” demonstrates the different ritualistic aspects of the day. Wallendorf and Arnould look at how the meal is eaten, what everyone eats, and ultimately what all that means in relation to the holiday. One aspect that is seen as an important part of the ritual is resolution. “Resolution is guided but not dictated by the emic ideology of Thanksgiving Day as a celebration of family togetherness” (Wallendorf 18). Family togetherness is how the entire family not just mom and dad, but extended as well including friends come together on this day. Family togetherness is capable of alleviating the stress and tensions that come up on the holiday. Such that when mom forgets to put a certain ingredient in the pie the family will act as if the pie is the best ever (Wallendorf 18). Through resolution, which is being able to solve issue in a calm and peaceful matter without a lot of fighting or arguing. In being with family and enjoying each other’s company people are more concerned about being together and showing thanks such that resolution to issues is able to …show more content…
“It’s going to be a bad Thanksgiving for families with divided voting records, of course, a sort of Facebook: The Musical, but only with shouting and right in your living room. There will be storm-outs. There will be no-shows…” (Ryan para.3). The election has the potential to tear apart families on the day of Thanksgiving. The fact that political views differ will make the day become something out of a soap opera. This year is different because typically it is conversations had in the family of different political views, now it is that no matter the view the election happened and it is hitting everyone differently. While some people in the family may be very happy others could be devastated for what this means for their lives. Instead of it being a day of togetherness and family it could be about political debates. The article does not account for the concept that in Thanksgiving there is resolution due to the “core familial values associated with the ritual” (Wallendorf 18). That in the nature of the holiday is a call for families to come together and truly love and appreciate one another. Family togetherness and its capability for resolution in the ritual of Thanksgiving is stronger than viewed by the

To begin with, a family should not forget to celebrate and spend time together even if there are better or more exciting things to be a part of. In “Fish Cheeks” by Amy Tan, a chinese family has a huge get together for a Christmas dinner. In this memoir, Amy writes: And even though I didn’t agree with her then, I knew that she understood how much I had suffered during the evening’s dinner. It wasn’t until many years later- long after I had…

it’s important for a family without a history to get together and celebrate times like these “because they evoke a past, imply a future, and hint at continuity.” Not having a history with the people you consider family could take a toll on your relationship because none of you have anything, such as memories, to fall back on. How do you consider your family to be people you don’t know anything about and don’t share meaningful memories with one another? Like Howard said, celebrating holidays allows you to enjoy one another’s company and come to the realization as to why you know these people you are with are your family.…

For this assignment I decided to look for an editorial cartoon. As I began my intriguing search, I started to realize that there were so many subjects to choose from. With Thanksgiving having been just last week and all of the discussions regarding Black Friday and whether or not Christmas shopping should officially begin on the evening of Thanksgiving or the early morning hours of Friday, I thought it would be appropriate to find an editorial cartoon on this very subject. " Thanksgiving Through The Years" by Jen Sorenson, is one editorial cartoon that really caught my eye. This cartoon consists of four separate images put together with words in such a way as to give the viewers a funny, yet sobering reminder of what Thanksgiving has not only been but what it could be in the future if society continues with current trends.…

However, the Lakeland Times article needs factual evidence of politics affecting the negativity weighing on America’s holiday spirit. The author presents presidential campaigns that were starting up for the 2012 general election saying that it’s too tiring and unhelpful: “we are just exasperated and fatigued with the perpetual nature of politics that we must endure these days; endless presidential campaigns, endless recall elections” this indicates that the entire nation would feel exasperated and fatigued, however, the author does not have the any studies to back up their claim. The information would have been more accurate if the Lakeland Times had presented statistics on the happiness of American citizens in an election year compared to a non-election year to see if there may be a correlation between politics and the holiday spirit. The Lakeland Times also leads to the idea Christmas decorations may be a way of trying to get the governments attention. Which they could broaden on that idea by connecting it to happiness of Americans and the correlation of election…

Thanksgiving dinner in my family is a big deal all our family and friends gather around to celebrate. There is always plenty of food, drinks, music and laughter. My family is loud, crazy and not afraid to voice their opinions so there is always drama at every dinner or family event. I chose to write on this because I never payed attention to detail or interactions at these dinners like why the women cook? Or why it is important that we are all together.…

The presidential elections of 2016, a fierce clashing of political parties and the ideals that defined each of them. America was divided, and it seemed as if it was a political civil war with each presidential candidate leading their acclaimed party. According to the FBI, the number of hate based crimes rose by five percent in 2016 from 2015, the elections playing a huge role in this (“US Hate Crimes”). After battling it out for several months, Donald Trump was able to beat out his political rival, Hillary Clinton, and win the presidency. This upset a vast number of Americans, for they weren’t going to accept him as president.…

It never occurred to me that family members can resent one another due to different political views. I found that I cannot relate to that, however. The article “Political Divide Splits Relationships — and Thanksgiving, Too” that appeared on Nov 15,2016 on the New York Times highlights the certain issues occurring within families because of the presidential election. These issues include, the rejection of Trump as our next president, an argument that is brought up is “Democrats are always trying to talk you out of your ideas” and the analogy of division in the United States.…

Trump’s election fits into these factors in this way: disagreeableness and positive effects on later experiences. A disagreeable experience often creates discord within an individual, creating a motivation for the individual to change either themselves or their environment to eliminate the internal dissonance. Consequently, this can lead to positive future experiences within Dewey’s model of experience through “the formation of attitudes, attitudes that are emotional and intellectual,… [of our] ways of meeting and responding to all the conditions which we meet in living” (Dewey 1938, 35). Therefore, in order to reorganize my experience of the presidential election, I have to reinvent my attitudes toward the people that Trump has demoralized.…

There are many varied interpretations, perceptions, and feelings regarding one of the most recognized holidays in the United States. Today, it appears many people face the professional and moral dilemma of just how to be honest and informative about the true nature of Thanksgiving without passing on historical distortions, and racial and cultural stereotypes. The problem is that part of what many feel they have learned in childhood about the Pilgrims and indigenous Indians and the 'First Thanksgiving ' is a mixture of both history and myth. There are those that take the meaning of Thanksgiving purely on face value while others decry the holiday as one that bespoke the imminent demise of Native Americans. I would like to think however, that the theme of Thanksgiving has truth and integrity far above and beyond what we and our fore bearers have made of it.…

Thanksgiving is one of my most treasured holidays. While there are some constants in the way thanksgiving is observed by Americans, it can mean different things to different people. In my family, Thanksgiving is a day to gather with those we love, to join together in a huge feast, give thanks for all that we have been blessed with throughout the year, watch football, and listen to the men talk about the big buck that got away during their morning hunt. My mother makes the turkey, the potatoes and her famous homemade stuffing.…
