Throughout the graphic novel, the readers should notice that the colors of all the drawings, except for the “shiny” magic sword that Beowulf used in order to defeat Grendel’s mother, are mostly just black and white. Aside from making this novel looks a little bit more serious and established, these colors had also helped to convey a heroic and solemn tone to accompany Beowulf and his epic journey. In the case of “Beowulf”, the graphic novel implemented a number of literary techniques such as commas with appositives and ellipsis to create suspense and put emphasis on Beowulf’s “fierce” battle. For example, just before Grendel announces his first attack, the book writes, on the bottom right of the page, “Here comes Grendel…”. Not only does this suggest a menacing tone, it also gives the reader an idea that Beowulf is indeed the greatest warrior since he is willing to take on such a fearsome
