The media had a strong influence on the majority viewpoint; it irritated the growing disappointment of the public with President Johnson’s administration’s policy in Vietnam, leading to even more anti-war attitudes and protests across the country. The Tet offensive proved to many Americans that their government had been misleading them about American progress in the war. The American troops bombed Viet Cong bases near Saigon in an unproductive effort to clear the area of guerillas. As the cruelty and senselessness of the war became clear, there was increasing opposition back home. The United States forces were now suffering heavy losses. As in every war, it is always the poorest, most depressed and oppressed layers of the population that provide most of the gun folder. Inside the United States there was a growing swell of dissatisfaction. Black Americans were tired of being second class citizens. The growing opposition to the war even found expression in pop music which led to the beginning of the end of the Vietnam War.
The Tet offensive showed considerable degree of military preparedness, skill and bravery on the part of the Vietnamese. It shook the morale of the United States army, which was forcibly made aware of its own vulnerability, and it had profound effect on the public opinion.
