Telomerase enzyme is apart of the Cancer cell hallmark 4, which is the unlimited cell division hallmark. “Activation of telomerase enzyme, an oncogene which allows cells to divide indefinitely” (2). Typically a cell will stop dividing on it’s own and when the cell divides without telomerase happening, the telomeres will be shorten down. Telomeres is the the ends of the chromosomes. “During development of a multi-cellular a special enzyme called telomerase keeps your telomeres long” (2). When it comes to cancer cells, 9 out of time 10 times the cells have activated telomerase. “However, too much telomerase can also lead to cancer by helping cells to become functionally immortal by avoiding the Hayflick Limit” (1). The reason too much telomerase is bad is due to the fact that cancer cells will have telomerase ignore the stop reproducing sign and will have mutations/cancer cells keep dividing and reproducing.“Since most cancer cells express telomerase to bypass the replicative limit imposed by telomere length, development and testing of new compounds that …show more content…
Scientists are doing research over someone that is stressful and comparing that person to someone that is not as stressed. “The authors noted that those who perceived events as less stressful than what the researchers expected had longer telomere lengths compared to individuals who perceived events as more stressful than what researchers expected” (1). Doing this experiments proves that feeling less stressful with make telomerase happen more often and have the telomere lengths be longer. The experiments come down to the person's personality because some events like a death in the family or almost being in a car accident can feel different for people. One example I can use of people personalities is that my sister was starting to get rashes during my grandpas funeral while I was not due to the fact she was feeling more stressed than I

They don't experience biological aging and maintain their ability to replicate and grow. Cancer cells lose the ability to communicate with other cells through chemical signals. They also lose sensitivity to anti-growth signals from surrounding cells. These signals normally restrict cellular growth. Cancer cells lose the adhesion molecules that keep them bonded to neighboring cells.…

Amelia Anthony Period 1 AP Biology 8/16/17 Survival of the Sickest The title of Survival of the Sickest by Dr. Sharon Moalem suggests a notion opposite to both common knowledge and common sense. The basis of evolution-- “survival of the fittest”--means that weak genes, like ones that cause harmful iron buildup, or misshaped and nonfunctional red blood cells, should have been eliminated long ago. Evolutionarily, Moalem sets up, hereditary diseases do not make sense. However, he proves passing down certain seemingly negative traits, in the long run, comes with some sort of benefit and reason.…

In our daily lives we have events, distractions, or daily activities that affect our attitudes. These events can and do create stress. George and Jones write, “What happens to employees off the job can affect their attitudes, behaviors, and performance on the job as well as their own well-being.” (p. 252). This essay will discuss major and minor life events and how they are a source of personal stress.…

WEEK 9: Health, Stress, Coping 1. The social cognitive theories help understand why individuals partake in health compromising or health promoting activities. The health belief theory suggests that there are several factors involved in health behaviours. It includes perceived susceptibility of the health threat, unrealistic optimistic biases of health threat, perceived severity of the health threat and the benefits and barriers in adopting this health behaviour. Cues to action influence health behaviours such as advice and advertised health campaigns.…

However every time a cell is divided some telomeres disappear. Telomerase is believed to cause cancer because if it is triggered in a cell it can grow and divide and which can cause cancer cells throughout the body. However “If telomerase activity was to be turned off, then telomeres in…

Stressed lifestyle and personality are some of the psychological factors that influence health and behaviour in our lives. However, our response to stressors determines our ability to control and manage or develop illness out of the stress. “Stress is experienced when a person’s perceived environmental, social, and physical demands exceed their perceived ability to cope, particularly when these demands are seen as endangering the person’s well-being in some way” (Cardwell & Flanagan, 2012). Walter Cannon’s (1932) fight or flight response elaborates the correlation between arousal and stress as due to the survival mechanisms that evolve in homosepian. According to Sarafino stress comprises of two components: the stressors, stimuli that make…

Your response to stress is the result of physiology, genetics and environment. Stress is a result of the flight fight response. The brain recognises a threat, the adrenal gland produces chemicals that affect changes in the brain and bodies functioning. The factors that cause variation in stress responses would be what the brain identifies as stress and the capacity of the adrenal gland to function. A person that lives in a fairly isolated location, the country say, may have very few challenges in life may have a calm and easy going personality but when faced with a crisis or a busier environment they may find themselves unable to cope.…

Considering multiple etiological triggers, the age associated changes start up with Initiator trigger mechanisms subsequently followed by damaging the protective reactionary shielding mechanism, both the initiator and the reactionary set of molecular mechanisms regulate multiple pathways, leading to the terminal molecular mechanisms - the two most significant molecular pathways involved are – the final gateways which when lethally affected send the cell to the grave yard. The terminal End point mechanisms involve, Flawed intercellular crosstalks and Stem cell fatigue and resulting in phenotypic changes in the cell/tissue and organism. FLAWED INTERCELLULAR CROSSTALKS: As age advances in any organism, cell’s own capacity to divide, rejuvenate and repair tends to slow down resulting in gradual oxidative damage, in addition to the obvious decline in telomerase activity and the dysfunctioning of the nutrient sensing pathways. However beyond these changes which occur within the cell’s own…

“Is There a Link Between Stress and Cancer?” It’s a common belief in women with breast cancer that stress caused their cancer. However, studies on this topic, including other types of cancer as well, have shown otherwise. Polly Newcomb, head of the cancer prevention program at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, conducted a study on whether or not stress causes breast cancer. She used trained interviewers to ask healthy women and women with cancer about their environments, medications, and medical histories.…
