Tell Me What You Think Greek

Assessing Motivation: When I wanted to find out what kind of topics Izzy would be interested in, I conducted the “Tell Me What You Like” assessment from Assessment for Reading Instruction by McKenna and Stahl (2015. Through this, I learned that Izzy is interested in animals, magic, jokes, camping, drawing/painting, horses, detectives, love, famous scientists, food, cooking, etc. Izzy’s variety of interests helps give me many options when choosing what kinds of books to use in my study. In using this information, Izzy will be more likely to feel motivated. To find out which settings Izzy likes to read in, I conducted the “Elementary Reading Attitude Survey”, by McKenna and Stahl (2015). I learned that Izzy does not like to read in loud settings as it makes it hard to focus. Additionally, she does not enjoy reading aloud to other people, as it makes her nervous. This information will be useful when working with Izzy as I now know that I should find quiet spaces for us to work in, and should only ask her to read aloud when we are not around many other students. This will help keep both Izzy’s motivation and confidence high. Planning the Lesson: For my motivation lesson, I used the topic of food/cooking. I decided to use this topic because Izzy expressed an interest in it, and I wanted to make sure to keep her motivated and focused. This decision was based on the idea proposed by McKenna and Stahl (2015) that one’s interests are a reliable way to maintain a positive attitude about reading. I knew that because Izzy is interested in food/cooking, reading books related to the topics would keep her engaged. The 6 Cs of motivation are an easy way to ensure that tasks are motivating (Turner & Paris, 1995). For my lesson, I focused on creating challenge and constructing meaning. Turner and Paris (1995) suggest that challenging tasks are more likely to help students learn new information and remain engaged. I used challenge in my lesson by using text and asking QAR questions that were challenging enough to keep Izzy’s attention and reorganize …show more content…
Izzy had a great imagination and could accurately answer each question asked. Additionally, I feel that I did a great job deciding on which book to use. This is because Izzy was engaged and ready to read the text. I feel that the only thing I did poorly was skip the “Before Reading” portion of my lesson, which I did unintentionally. Two things that I would change are adding in the questions that I improvised during the read aloud and avoid asking the questions that put us off task. There were moments that I came up with a question that I did not originally have in my lesson plan. For the most part, this was okay and I would add the questions to the lesson if used in the future. There were also a few questions that threw us off track. For example, “have you ever plugged your nose while eating a food you did not like?” While this question was related to the text, it ended up sending Izzy on a tangent about food that she did not like. In the future, I would make more of an effort to ask only questions about the text, and save personal questions that are related to the text for a time set aside either before or after conducting the read

Right now, I do ask questions, but they are usually returned with one-word responses. I believe that right now I am still very nervous, but I think if I write questions down before class I can use them and build off of them to make my students think more. Ancient Greece can be traced back to the Stone Age hunters (6000-2900 B.C.); however, Greek culture was much more notable from 1100-146 B.C., and likely had a more profound impact on Western civilization than any other culture. From 1100-750 B.C., a period known as the Dark Ages, Ancient Greece was immersed with wars and invasions and, over time, was divided into small, city states. During the Archaic Period (750-500 B.C.), art, the beginnings of democracy, and the knowledge and understanding of the written language started to re-emerge. The Greeks fought the Persians during the Classical Period (500-336 B.C.) and Athens reached its greatest political and cultural heights, including full development of a democratic plan of government (Document…

Whether it be a Goosebumps books or Mark Twain books you 'll go anywhere it leads you, but once I got into middle school and high school the books weren 't like that anymore. School books do have plenty of information in them, but they’re uninteresting to read. Not too many people want to get lost in a book about photosynthesis, they would much rather read a story about action and adventure. I do feel like reading the informational books for studies and homework did help when I would read them to finish my school work, but thats only if I could make myself read through them. Usually I would just skim through the book rather than read it word for word to get the main idea.…

Reading Interest Survey The two students I interviewed for the interest reading survey were my two brothers Airian and Adrian. The two had very different results. I will analyze their results individually and then I will analyze them together as well as make suggestions for each of the two in topics I believe they would be interested in reading. Since the two were raised in different settings I will also bring in the concept of nature vs. nurture and how it can possibly affect ones interest in reading.…

    How To Read Aloud

My read aloud did not followed my lesson plan, before I read the story to the students, I forgot to show the students all the pictures in the storybook as I planned. The high points from my read aloud were that the students were engaged by acting out as baby owls or owl mother, and answering the questions from the storybook. The weak points from my read aloud were reading the story too fast, and after I asked a question to the students, I should wait a little longer wait time for the students to think and response. To make the read aloud better for next time, I will need to slow down my speed and pause as needed. Also, after reading the story, I should ask the students some questions for them to connect their own experiences with the story,…

    Greek Observation

Previous studies have demonstrated that observing another’s hand-grasping action modulates the observer’s attention to the object that is congruent with the size of the aperture of the hand. In this study, we investigated whether observing tool grasping also modulates the observer’s attention. On a simple detection task, pictures of two objects (small and large object) and a hand or a tool were presented on a screen. Then, the hand or the tool was shown in either a precision grip (to grasp the small object) or a power grip (to grasp the large object), followed by a target presented either over the small object or over the large object. The results indicate that participants detected the target presented over an object that is congruent with…

Your discussion board was good. It was interesting and gave a point of view I had not thought of before. I thought that in today's culture everyone really had a good understanding of tragedy and that society today had a better understanding of it. After reading the part of your post about 9/11 I started to rethink my point of view a little. You talked about calling something a tragedy then not really thinking about it after and not learning from it.…

    My Reading Experience

In seventh grade, my reading experience went farther downhill. The teacher expected us to do projects reflecting over what we had read every time we finished a book, with a minimum of five per trimester. I hated doing these reflection projects, so my quantity of reading fell further to just five books every three months. However, the final nail in the coffin of my reading came in eighth grade. On the first day of school, the teacher informed us that the only genre we would be allowed to read for out reading logs, which were unnecessarily complicated, was nonfiction.…

Research paper “A new study shows that kids read for fun less and less as they get older, with 45% of 17-year-olds saying they read by choice only once or twice a year.” As students progress in our school system, they have lost more and more interest in reading for fun, which ultimately means they read less and less. Has our school system made reading boring? Could students interest in reading have declined because reading in school is taught around tests? Could the parents be to blame?…
