At the young age of twenty-three he became a New York assemblyman. As a New York assemblyman he was known as a reformer, and had hope of becoming the Speaker; however he ended up losing. He was so successful as an Assemblyman, he served three terms! Although on February 14th 1884, tragedy strikes, forcing him out of politics and to head for the Dakotas and the Wild West. On that day, his wife and mother die. As a result Teddy flees to the west for peace and solitude. He spends three years in the Badlands where he fell in love with the outdoors. He certainly seems like the most popular and well liked, and there’s a reason why he was in office for so long. Not only was he well liked, he also knew how to get laws passed, stand up to corruption, and spread the power of the U.S. What I really liked about him was his decision to build the Panama Canal, set aside national parks, and build up the name of the U.S. By creating the Panama Canal, trade was made easier. This was a huge deal, not only for the U.S, but also the world. He didn’t do this to help America, but rather in improve trading conditions for the world. He kept what was best for everyone in mind and not only what would benefit America. The Panama Canal helped create jobs, which helped the economy. This also made trade and travel faster and easier.
