Art is a way to express the emotions and experiences of an individual. The current generation is expressing art on their bodies in the form of tattoos. Tattoos are now becoming less taboo than they once were. In the past, if a person had tattoos then people would either think that they were in a gang, freak show, or a sailor. I have chosen to explore the perception of tattoos and more specifically, tattoos in the work place. Tattoos in the work place specifically interest me for the career that I am choosing to enter. The way that people view tattoos has a big impact on my career and me because one day I wish to become a math teacher. Being a teacher with tattoos worries me because of the way that my student’s parents may view me. I started …show more content…
It came from a website called PicoSure a manufacture of a laser removal device. According to PicoSure, tattoos in the United States are becoming more and more popular. An artist in Michigan even admitted that “he saw government workers, lawyers and other professionals as clients just as frequently as he performed tattoos on students” (PicoSure). Even people in white collar jobs are getting tattoos, however some white collar jobs will not consider an applicant or give someone a promotion due to the fact that they have visible tattoos. They give a background of tattoos and women stating that in the 1800’s circus women were some of the first to get tattoos solely for business reasons. However, today tattoos are becoming less taboo and more about identity and self-expression for both men and women. This study wanted to know specifically if certain tattoos made a woman look more promiscuous. The students were shown four different photos. One had a women showing no tattoos while the other three had different tattoos such as a butterfly, rose, and skull with cross bones. This study showed that the overall impression of the women was around the same with or without a tattoo. To me I think this study was degrading and I do not think that someone should be viewed as promiscuous just because they express themselves through art on their body. Tattoos should not be seen as a sign of promiscuity, they should be viewed as identity expression for the desire to be
