Born 11 September 1965, is the President of Syria. He has served as President since 2000, when he succeeded his father, Hafez, his father, who led Syria for 30 years until his death. Assad graduated from the medical school of Damascus University in 1988, and started to work as a physician in the army. In 1994, after his elder brother Bassel, who was being groomed to succeed his father, was killed in a car crash, Bashar returned to Syria from another college. Assad entered the military academy, taking charge of the Syrian occupation of Lebanon in 1998. In December 2000, Assad married Asma Assad. The first is the dictatorship, he inherited control from his father, Assad’s father and Assad both have used harsh violence to maintain order. Since the late 1960's, there has been an emergency law, similar to Hitler’s which has been in effect which grants the President unlimited powers to "control problems". On 18 May 2011, Barack Obama declared sanctions against Assad in hope to stop him, later other countries joined with the U.S. sanctions. Then on June 20, 2011 Assad made a speech, about an hour long, and promised to communicate with the countries with sanctions and also told the refugees that fled to Turkey, that they should return.The second reason for the civil war is the rights issue. Syria’s government tortures, and executes people who disagree with how the country is led, and even doesn’t try to hide their malicious acts. These revolters want protection for rights so that they can speak, assemble, worship, and have privacy and protection from unreasonable searches. Apparently they know how America is ran. The next logical question is what Assad is going to do about the future. Since these people are revolting it proves that they don’t have the best feelings toward him. Many people don’t like him because of his malicious ideals towards Israel. Recently, Bashar made a deal with the Russians for an advanced missile system that might be able to penetrate Israel’s iron dome defence system. Some pacifists wish he would stop the attacks on Israel so that they could live safer lives in
